Plot[edit]

The film begins with Dasaradha Maharaja announcing the crowning ceremony of Lord Rama which immerses the people of Ayodhya in joy. Whereat, all the gods plead Lord Brahma to bar to fulfill the meaning of Rama Avatar. Hence, Goddess Saraswathi speaks through Kaikeyi. Parallelly, Mandhara, a wicked maidservant exaggerates her to seek Dasaradha the two boons given by him, at the time of the Devasura war. Dasaratha offers to present and Kaikeya does so, the first one is to announce her son Bharatha as the emperor. Following, the exile of Rama for 14 years. The heartbroken Dasaradha, constrained by his rigid devotion to his given word, accedes to Kaikeyi's demands. Rama also deliberately accepts his father's reluctant decree with absolute submission and calm self-control.

Rama quits with Lakshmana & Seeta when his devotee Guha crosses him to either side of the river Ganga in his boat. After that Dasaradha dies due to the agony when Bharatha backs and flares up on his mother affirming the actuality. Accordingly, the illusion that occurred to her, is removed, and realizes her mistake. Forthwith, Bharata rushes to retrieve Rama but he denies obeying his father’s words. So, Bharata obtains his sandals as a gesture to Rama and starts ruling Ayodhya. After 13 years, Rama, Seeta & Lakshmana with the blessings of Atrimuni & Anasuya and arrives at Panchavathi. Wherein, Surpanaka, sister of Ravana, entices the brothers when Lakshmana cuts off her nose & ears.

Being cognizant of it, infuriated Ravana ploys to seize Seeta with the aid of the Maricha, who turns into a golden deer. Entranced by its beauty, Seeta pleads with Rama to capture it. Rama chases the deer, leaving Seeta under Lakshmana's guard. Rama shoots an arrow at the deer before dying it shouts in the voice of Rama for rescue. Frightened Seeta forces Lakshmana to go which he obeys but stipulates she not leave the cottage by drawing a chalk outline for her protection. Meanwhile, Ravana in the guise of an ascetic requests Seeta's hospitality when she crosses the line and is forcibly carried away. Jatayu tries to arrest Ravana but loses his wings and falls to the ground. Rama & Lakshmana sight him and learn about Seeta's abduction. After completing its funeral, they set out to shield Seeta.

Ongoing, they meet Kabandha an ascetic Shabari, who directs them toward Sugriva & Hanuman. So, they land at Kishkinda and via Hanuman acquire friendship with Sugriva. Rama kills his malice brother Vaali and crowns Sugriva. Then Vanaras are under the hunt of Seeta. Rama provides his ring to Hanuman as his identity. Hanuman crosses the seas and reaches Lanka where he locates Seeta in Ashoka grove. Here, he bestows the ring on her and states Rama will take avenge for the insult of her abduction. Plus, he takes her golden hairband Chudamani from Seeta as her recognition. Hanuman sets fire to Lanka and comes back to Rama warning Ravana. As of now, Rama with the help of Vanaras constructs a bridge over the sea and reaches Lanka when Ravana too gets ready for battle. Consequently, Vibishana a good Samaritan, and brother of Ravana requests him to pardon Rama by reverting Seeta. As a result, he has been ostracized from Lanka when Vibishana propitiates Rama who promises to present Lanka.

However, Rama wants to conduct a sacred ritual before the war for which a great Brahmin of renowned qualities is required and there is only one person in this universe that is Ravana. Rama sends an invitation to Ravana through Hanuman when unhesitatingly, Ravana moves and does so. Rama takes the blessing of Ravana and begins the war. In the war, Kumbhakarna, Indrajit, and ultimately Ravana also die at the hands of Rama. On meeting Sita, Rama asks her to undergo an Agni Pariksha test of fire to prove her chastity, as he wants to get rid of the rumors surrounding her purity. Seeta plunges into the sacrificial fire, and Lord Agni of fire raises Seeta, unharmed, to the throne, attesting to her fidelity. Rama reaches Ayodhya along with Sita, Lakshmana, Hanuman, and other Vanaras. Finally, the movie ends on a happy note with the coronation of Rama & Seeta with Lakshamana, Bharatha, Satrughuna, and Hanuman at his feet.

Reception[edit]

Venkatrao of Andhra Patrika in his review dated 11 September 1978 appreciated the film's portrayal of Ravana. He felt that scenes such as Ravana teaching military tactics to Lakshmana despite knowing that he's Rama's aid were thought-provoking.[4] Sarada writing for Zamin Ryot on 22 September 1978 was critical of Rama Rao for picking up similar roles in his films. She opined that Rama Rao had hardly shown any improvement in his acting and directing ability.[5]
