D'Amelio started her TikTok journey in May 2019 by posting a lip-syncing video with a friend. Her first video to gain significant attention was a duet with the user Move With Joy, which she uploaded in July 2019. Charli has mentioned her bewilderment regarding her sudden fame, stating to Variety, ''I see myself as just a regular teenager whom many people watch for some reason. It doesn’t quite make sense to me, but I’m trying to understand it.'' Since then, most of her content has revolved around dancing to popular songs on the platform.
In October 2019, she gained even more visibility for her performances of the "Renegade" dance to K Camp's song "Lottery". This led to her being credited with popularising the dance on social media, although there were misconceptions that she had created it, earning her the title of "CEO of Renegade" among TikTok users. However, following a New York Times article highlighting dancer Jalaiah Harmon as the original creator of the dance, Charli faced online criticism for not giving credit to Harmon. In response, she began to consistently acknowledge the original creators of the dances she showcased. In November 2019, she joined The Hype House, a collaborative TikTok content house, along with her sister, Dixie.
