He had started his career as a research officer in the Punjab State Planning Board in 1972. Thereafter, he became an excise and taxation officer in the Punjab Excise Department. Som Parkash has served as the deputy commissioner of Faridkot, Hoshiarpur and Jalandhar and has also held posts like the Labour Commissioner, Punjab Urban Planning and Development Authority (PUDA) chief administrator, managing director of the Punjab Financial Corporation and director of the Social Security Department.

Som Parkash first unsuccessfully contested for [[Lok Sabha]] during [[2009 Indian general election|Indian general elections]] in 2009 from Hoshiarpur constituency.<ref name=ie1>{{cite news|title=In Phagwara, all parties may turn to former govt officials for Assembly polls|url=http://www.indianexpress.com/news/in-phagwara-all-parties-may-turn-to-former-govt-officials-for-assembly-polls/877358/|accessdate=4 July 2013|newspaper=IndianExpress|date=Nov 18, 2011}}</ref> Due to corruption charges, sitting MLA from Phagwara Swarna Ram was dropped from the state cabinet, which led BJP to look for a new candidate and Som Parkash was appointed as BJP candidate in 2012 Punjab elections. He successfully contested and became MLA from Phagwara.
