Sharma was born and brought up in Delhi, India to a retired military officer.<ref name="TH">{{Cite book |last=Teri |first=Deeksha |url=https://www.thehindu.com/education/recognise-your-unique-talent/article19609089.ece |title=The Hindu |date=2017-09-03 |language=en-IN |issn=0971-751X}}</ref> Mayur did his schooling at the [[Air Force Bal Bharti School]] and completed his graduation from [[Cambridge University]].<ref name="TH" /> He started his early education with Air Force School, [[Subroto Park]] and then shifted to [[St. Xavier's High School]] in [[Bombay]], for three years. He returned to [[Air Force Bal Bharti School]] and completed his schooling there. He is the holder of six degrees including B.Sc. in zoology to NIFT, corporate training.<ref name="TH" /> He is married and has two children. He co-anchored and scripted the 2007 weekly travel and food show ''Highway On My Plate'' along with his childhood friend and food enthusiasts [[Rocky Singh]].{{Cite book |last=Teri |first=Deeksha |url=https://insider.in/food-trippin-featuring-rocky-and-mayur7thmay/event |title=Food Trippin' featuring Rocky & Mayur |date=2017-09-03 |language=en |issn=0971-751X}} Before joining the cast of the show, Sharma has taught English in village schools in Africa and South America, and helped reconstruct a devastated village in Sri Lanka that was hit by the tsunami. He writes articles about food, travel and current affairs that have been published in the New York Times (India Ink), FHM, and Food & Nightlife. He has travelled and hitch-hiked his way across sixty five countries and is passionate about squash and rock-climbing.
