Siege of Kalinjar was a military conflict fought in 1022 between the Ghaznavid Empire, led by Mahmud of Ghazni, and the Chandel Empire, ruled by Vidyadhara Varman. To avenge his defeat in 1019, Mahmud invaded the Chandel Empire and besieged Kalinjar Fort, the military capital of the Chandel Empire. The Ghaznavid army failed to capture the fortress and was defeated. Mahmud subsequently negotiated a peace settlement with Vidyadhara and withdrew.

Background[edit | edit source]

In 1019, Mahmud of Ghazni attacked the Chandela emperor Vidyadhara Varman to punish him for killing the Ghaznavid vassal, but this conflict ended with Mahmud's defeat at the hands of Vidyadhara Varman.

To avenge his defeat in 1019, Mahmud returned to India with a renewed campaign against the Chandel Empire, this time leading a large army. After advancing through central India and attacking and subduing the Kachhapaghatas of Gwalior Fort, whose king was a haakim of Chandelas, he proceeded towards Kalinjar Fort, the capital of the Chandel Empire, where he began the siege against Vidyadhara Varman.

Siege[edit | edit source]

Mahmud's army surrounded Kalinjar and began a siege of the fortress. The Ghaznavid forces made repeated efforts to overcome the fortifications, but were unable to capture Kalinjar. The fortress's elevated position and strong defensive works made a direct assault difficult.

After failing to take the fortress by force and being defeated by Vidyadhara Varman again, Mahmud entered into negotiations with Vidyadhara Varman. The siege was brought to an end through a negotiated peace settlement rather than the capture of Kalinjar. Accounts describe an exchange of valuable gifts, including elephants, between the two rulers.

Aftermath[edit | edit source]

Following the negotiations, Mahmud withdrew from Kalinjar and returned towards Ghazni. The Chandel Empire retained control of Kalinjar, and the fortress was not incorporated into the Ghaznavid Empire.

The outcome has been interpreted differently in the surviving sources. Persian chroniclers portrayed the expedition as a success for Mahmud, while modern historical interpretations emphasize that he was defeated by Vidyadhara Varman and failed to capture Kalinjar and withdrew after reaching a negotiated settlement with Vidyadhara Varman.
