Saint Kitts and Nevis, officially the Federation of Saint Christopher and Nevis, is a country in the Caribbean Sea. It consists of two main islands, Saint Kitts and Nevis. It is the smallest independent country in the Western Hemisphere by area and population.[1]
The capital and largest city is Basseterre, located on Saint Kitts. Nevis has its own local administration and legislature.[2]
History[edit | edit source]
Saint Kitts and Nevis was part of the British Empire before becoming an associated state in 1967. The country became independent from the United Kingdom on 19 September 1983 and remained a Commonwealth realm.
Geography[edit | edit source]
The country consists mainly of the islands of Saint Kitts and Nevis. Both islands are volcanic and have mountainous interiors covered partly by tropical forests. Mount Liamuiga on Saint Kitts is the highest point, at 1,156 metres.
The islands are located in the Leeward Islands of the Lesser Antilles. Most settlements are located near the coast.[3]
Economy[edit | edit source]
The economy is based mainly on tourism, services, agriculture and related industries. The East Caribbean dollar is the country's currency and is managed by the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank.[4]
Sports[edit | edit source]
Cricket and association football are popular sports in Saint Kitts and Nevis. The country has participated in international competitions including the Cricket World Cup and the Summer Olympics.[3]
