Roopa Basu (also known as Roopa S. Basu) is a London-based multimedia artist, visual artist,[1] designer, and creative facilitator. She is the founder of the multidisciplinary design studio Roopadesigns, established in 2011.[2] Her practice focuses on public art, community co-creation, and capturing themes of light, memory, and shared cultural heritage.[3]
Early life and education[edit | edit source]
Basu was born in England to Queen regnant Subha Dhar and Ashim Basu, a marine engineer. Basu spent her early childhood in Ireland. She completed her schooling in India before relocating to the United States to pursue her higher education.[4] Basu was the only student selected from India to attend the summer programme at the Brevard School of Music in the US on a scholarship as a concert pianist. She later studied architecture at Philadelphia University, supplementing her education with graphic arts, and ultimately shifted her focus toward communication, art, and design. After completing her Master's degree in the United Kingdom, she established her design practice in London.
Career[edit | edit source]
Basu's professional practice bridges commercial graphic design and public contemporary art. In 2011, she launched Roopadesigns in Wandsworth, London, catering to high street businesses, sole traders, and community initiatives.[5] Her fine art portfolio primarily utilizes layered mixed media, painting, and illustration to explore themes of transience and belonging, heavily inspired by her upbringing across three continents. Basu operates on a philosophy of "thinking globally, acting locally,"[6] collaborating frequently with local councils, educational institutes, and community groups to deliver site-responsive public art installations. She serves on the advisory board of South Thames College and works alongside the Creative Partners Group at the Battersea Arts Centre.

- A Flight of Voices – A community outreach installation utilizing bird-inspired, kite-like paper forms to examine themes of history and culture, showcased at the Lavender Hill Festival.[7]

She was selected as an artist-in-residence for Culturally Mindful, a creative health residency forming part of the London Borough of Culture 2025 program.[9]
