Anirban Dey,[1] popularly known as Roddur Roy, is a controversial social media persona. He is a psychoanalyst and describes himself as a post-modernist spiritualist-guru. He is also the progenitor of Moxa (from Sanskrit Moksha) Movement whose views are perceived to be anarcho-nihilist. Dey's work is often erotic and surreal in nature with verbal abuse as means of satire. His poems are highly dark comedy laden and target contemporary sociopolitical issues. His versions of famous Rabindrasangeet are often subject to controversy due to the vulgar lyrics.

Dey was born in Dum Dum of Kolkata.[1] He graduated from Ramnagar College and worked for an IT company in Delhi but left it to pursue his studies.[2] Very little is known about Dey's early life.
YouTube[edit | edit source]
He began his YouTube career back in 2010. Early on, he mostly sang Tagore's songs as it is with unusual instrumentals. Slowly however, he transitioned into much erotic and surreal style of content. Some of the content is schizophrenic,[3] pessimistic[4] or just plainly absurd.
Later on, he verbally abused many Bengali celebrities, institutions and groups, with or without mentioning their names. By that time he had a major cult-like youth following. He is an admirer of Nabarun Bhattacharya,[5][6] who was a Bengali poet and novelist, similarly known for his politically-charged anarchic novels. According to Dey in a podcast,[7] Bhattacharya's book, Purander Vater Kabita, inspired him to write poems in a similar fashion.
The recurring theme of his videos is the enslavement by the totalitarian state, unrighteous norms and prejudices of the society, and a message to spread peace and prosperity amongst all. He defines sexuality as a 'language of love', and not its apparent pornographic appeal, which is the essence of spiritual sexuality in India.

RBU Controversy (2020)[edit | edit source]
A segment of an old video of Dey's MoxaDopeComedy series,[8] went viral on the internet where he sings, Sedin Dujone written by Tagore with expletives though never mentions of him. A group of girls from Rabindra Bharati University during Basanta Utsav were caught having written "banrha chand uthechilo gogone" on their back, which in Bengali has a vulgar connotation. This led to a huge controversy with the Vice Chancellor Saybasachi Basu Ray Chaudhuary, resigning and an arrest warrant against Dey being filed.[9] Dey put an open challenge to arrest him and also responds to this in multiple YouTube videos, and in one, quite aggressively.[10][11]
Abusing CM of West Bengal (2022)[edit | edit source]
Dey again found himself in controversy, when he went on verbally abuse chief minister of West Bengal over her reception of Sahitya Akademi Award for Kabita Bitan.[12] She was faced with huge criticism for that event. Dey abused Rupankar Bagchi over controversial comments on death of KK.[13] AITC's Santanu Sen filed a FIR against Dey on 3 June 2022.[14] He again challenged the police to catch him. This time however, the Kolkata Police was able to arrest Dey from South Goa on 7 June 2022.[14] However, he got bail on the 21 June,[15] but discontinued his YouTube channel thereafter. However, he continued going live on Facebook. As of 2023, he has resumed his YouTube channel.
