Walter Vincent Wright (born September 29, 1983), better known by his stage name Revelation 13:18, is an American record producer and rapper. He is best known for the single "Old School" feat. Jean-Michel Basquiat.

Early life and career[edit]

Walter Vincent Wright was born in Louisville, Kentucky, to Ernest and Veronica Wright. He attended DuPont Manual High School where he was in the chemistry class of tobacco industry whistleblower Jeffrey Wigand. Wright obtained a scholarship for the University of Northern Iowa.

While attending University of Northern Iowa, he became a redshirt freshman on the 2002 Gateway Football Conference Championship Team, as well as one of the Division 1-AA Semi-Finalists that same year.[1]

Music career[edit]

Wright began producing music under the alias Revelation 13:18, and released his debut EP Now's The Time On January 7, 2014.[2] His instrumental album Beat Bop was released later the same year.[3] He released Wave as a posthumous collaboration with J Dilla on March 11, 2014. The track "Wave" was originally on J. Dilla's album Donuts, the last album J Dilla released during his life.

On August 12, 2014, Revelation 13:18 released the single "Old School" featuring Jean-Michel Basquiat, along with the self-titled album Revelation 13:18 x Basquiat.[4] The release date of "Old School" coincided with the anniversary of Basquiat's death. The single received attention after American rapper and producer Jay-Z dressed up as Basquiat for Halloween the same year .[5][6]Jay-Z would later release his 13th studio album 4:44 with cult followers declaring on the internet the album title was decoded as 666 the Mark of the Beast.[7][8][9][10]

The single gained him further recognition from DJ Mary Anne Hobbs and BBC Music Radio 6.[11][12]

Revelation 13:18 x Basquiat inspired a Broadway musical based on the life of Basquiat composed by Jon Batiste, produced by Alan Marks and Barbara Marks, and directed by John Doyle.[13][14]

In 2019, Revelation 13:18 founded his own record label, Knowledge + Wisdom = Understanding, Inc.[6][10][15]
