Ramdev Mahato

Not to be confused with Ramdeo Mahto.

Ramdev Mahato is an Indian politician and a former Member of Bihar Legislative Assembly from Madhubani Assembly constituency. He had been elected from Madhubani constituency to Bihar Legislative Assembly for four times between 2000 and 2010. Mahato was associated with Bhartiya Janata Party and is recognised as an influential leader of Mithilanchal region of Bihar. In 2020 Bihar Assembly elections, he left BJP and contested the elections from Madhubani constituency as an independent candidate, as this constituency was allotted to Vikassheel Insan Party in seat sharing arrangement; he, however, returned to BJP in 2022.

Political career

Mahato won Assembly elections from Madhubani constituency in 2000 and in the year 2005 and 2010 as well. Reportedly, in 2005, elections were held twice due to lack of majority to any party or coalition, required to form government. He won both the elections held that year. In 2015, Mahato was defeated by Rashtriya Janata Dal candidate Samir Kumar Mahaseth, who later became a minister in Government of Bihar. In this election, the RJD candidate secured 76,823 votes, while Mahato was able to secure 69,519 votes and finished in second position. In 2020 Bihar Assembly elections, he left BJP and contested as independent candidate from Madhubani constituency, losing to Samir Kumar Mahaseth again. In 2020, Mahato had accused BJP leaders of Bihar of not giving due importance to the ground level political workers and preferring candidates with money power over others in distribution of ticket to contest the elections. Consequently, he left BJP, but returned to it in 2022 once again after suffering setbacks in 2020 Assembly elections.
