Pragati Jalan Sureka or Pragati Sureka is an Indian author, clinical psychologist and has professional credentials from Harvard Medical School, Boston.[1] She is known for her book “Hope” published by Scholastic India. The book narrates the stories of three children Ryan, Shoma and Kabir, who face various emotional challenges because of the stress and strain of modern life, and attempts to further the conversation around mental health for children and parents, too.[2][3]

Apart from her clinical practice, she is also a faculty member at Kornash, The Lifestyle Management School, Kolkata – a mental health vocational training facility. Besides teaching their diploma programme, she conducts weekly self-development sessions for adults and children stressing on aspects such as Self-Esteem, Positive Body Image, Whole Person Potential and Emotional Intelligence.[4]

Sureka completed her nursery education from L & T preparatory school, Kansabahal, Orissa and attended Nirmala English Convent School, Rajgangpur, Orissa. She maintained a ranking of the top 3 in academics all through her school Life. In class 3 was awarded the school running shield for the best lower primary school student for academics as well as a prize for the best all-rounder. In class 6, she got the school cup for being first in the entire primary section in academics.

From 1987 to 1993, she studied at Maharani Gayatri Devi Girls School and participated in various co-curricular activities and sports in the school. She pursued Science for CBSE 12th grade and got an A-plus grade. She became House Captain in Class 12 and represented Jaipur and played state level Basketball tournaments. She completed her B com. Hons with distinction from Rourkela Municipal College in 1996.

Early life[edit]

Sureka was born in Orissa where she completed her early education. She went to Nirmala English Convent School in Rajgangpur, Orissa and Maharani Gayatri Devi Girls School. Sureka completed her graduation in commerce from Rourkela Municipal College, Orissa. In 2003, she was awarded a Diploma in counselling and psychotherapy from the Kornash, The lifestyle Management School, Diploma in addiction counselling from Kripa Foundation in 2005. She has completed her Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) and Bachelor of Science (BSe) from the University of Nottingham in 2010. She obtained an MA in clinical psychology from the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) in 2018. Sureka also cleared the National Eligibility Test (NET) in 1st attempt with 98 percentile rank in 2020.[5]
