'Pirates of the Caribbean is an American film series produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and adapted from Disney's theme park attraction of the same name. The film series constitutes a major component of the broader Pirates of the Caribbean media franchise and is set primarily in the Caribbean, depicting a fictionalised version of the Golden Age of Piracy (approximately 1650–1726), while also extending into a mid-1700s timeframe.

The series has been directed by several filmmakers: Gore Verbinski (films 1–3), Rob Marshall (4), and Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg (5). The screenplay is primarily credited to Ted Elliott (films 1–4) and Terry Rossio (films 1–5), with additional contributions from Stuart Beattie (1), Jay Wolpert (1), and Jeff Nathanson (5).

The narrative follows the adventures of Captain Jack Sparrow, portrayed by Johnny Depp, alongside various supporting characters including his former first mate Hector Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush) and first mate Joshamee Gibbs (Kevin McNally) throughout the course of the films.

The franchise commenced in 2003 with Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, which received positive reception from both audiences and film critics, grossing $654 million worldwide at the box office. Following the first film's success, Walt Disney Pictures confirmed plans for an extended series. The second installment, Dead Man's Chest (2006), shattered financial records during its premiere day and became the highest-grossing film of 2006, earning nearly $1.1 billion globally. The third film, At World's End (2007), followed with $962 million in worldwide box office revenue. Disney released the fourth film, On Stranger Tides (2011), in conventional 2D, Digital 3-D, and IMAX 3D formats, becoming the second film in the franchise and only the eighth film in cinema history to surpass $1 billion at the time of its release. The fifth and final film, Dead Men Tell No Tales (2017), earned $796 million worldwide.

The entire franchise has accumulated over $4.5 billion in worldwide box office revenue, ranking it as the 17th-highest-grossing film series of all time. It holds the distinction of being the first film franchise to produce two or more films that have grossed over $1 billion each.
