Padmavati, Padmini or also known as Padmavatigupta was a wife of Purugupta who ruled the Gupta Empire as a ruler. Her name Padmini or Padmavati may come in the stone inscriptions of King Bhanugupta, as his daughter. Her life was in a tragic story when her story life was ended in a beautiful way, somecopper plates of her husband, Purugupta may describe she was a very good friend of Prabhavatigupta. She was legal in history but was not familiar in that era. She was most likely the mother of Kumaragupta II.

Padmavati too tried her best but successfully she had ruled the Gupta Empire as regent for her husband. Bhanugupta was a womanizer but some sources describe him being as a father of Padmavati. He married princess Hemavati but didn't spend much time with her and wanted to marry Padmavati. She felt disgusting and refused to marry him as he was already married. For not accepting the proposal, Bhanugupta made a plan to kidnap Padmavati and sex with her. Purugupta didn't allow Bhanugupta to marry her as Shrimitradevi was very strict with Bhanugupta. He didn't like his own wife, Hemavati but wanted to marry Padmavati. Scared Padmavati did suicide and left Purugupta as Bhanugupta will catch her. After the death of Queen Padmavati, Purugupta did not marry another women as she was his very favorite wife. The word Padmavati may also refer to Rani Padmavati, wife of Ratnasimha.

Early life[edit]

Queen Padmavati was the daughter of Bhanugupta and Queen Hemavati according to the stone inscriptions of Purugupta. We don't have any mention about which dynasty, she belonged to. She also had four sons with Purugupta - Kumaragupta II, Vainyagupta, Narasimhagupta and Budhagupta. After the death of her friend, Prabhavati's husband, Rudrasena II, she advised her friend to come with her for taking care of the three children of Prabhavatigupta. Bhanugupta took advantage of Prabhavati, just because she was a widow. Padmavati took care of her son as well as her friend's son. She was very frightened that if Bhanugupta came, there is no way to be rescued from him. So, Prabhavati readily agreed to go with her. But as soon as she left the Vakataka dynasty, Bhanugupta suddenly came in front of them to kidnap one woman. Prabhavati, however pushes Bhanugupta and goes away with her friend, Padmavati. It is said she died in Vijaynagar.

Friends with Prabhavati[edit]

She was a good friend of Prabhavati and accompanied her during the death of Rudrasena II. She also felt very bad when Rudrasen II died and left Prabhavati when she was young with her three children. The Children were also missing their father. However, Padmavati had a good relation with her. Some people say that her other name was Padmadevi.
