Orissa Balu



Uraiyur Sivagnanam Balasubramani (born 7 April 1963), better known as Orissa Balu (Tamil: ஒரிசா பாலு), is a researcher and historian from Uraiyur, Tamil Nadu in Southern India. His areas of interest include integrated ocean culture research, Tamil language research, physics and Tamil diaspora coordination.

Balu runs the Integrated Ocean Culture Research Foundation, based in Chennai.[1] For over 21 years,[timeframe?] he has researched sea turtles and human migration patterns, believing that ancient Tamil traders followed the routes of the turtles.[1][2][3]

He has researched the Tamil-Korean relationship, and how ancient Tamils travelled to Korea around 1st century AD, working with researchers N.Kannan,[which?] and Dr Nagarajan.[which?][4]

He has researched Kumari Kandam, a mythical ancient sunken continent, for 15 years.[timeframe?][5] He has been appointed as amicus curiae by the Madurai High Court, submitted that he along with S M Ramasamy, retired vice-chancellor of Gandhigram Rural Institute who is presently the consultant for Poombukar project in Bharathidasan University at Trichy, will do the preliminary study on Kumari Kandam.[5][6]
