Nigar Shaji (Tamil: நிகர் ஷாஜி) is an Indian space scientist who works at Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), India's national space agency. She is the project director of Aditya-L1, India's first solar mission, which launched successfully on 2 September 2023 at 11:50am (IST).[1][2][3][4][5]

Early life and education[edit]

Shaji was raised in Sengottai,[3] in the Tenkasi district of Tamil Nadu.[2] She received an English-based education at Sengottai government higher secondary school.[3] She attended Madurai Kamaraj University, where she earned an engineering degree in electronics and communications, and went on to earn a master's degree in electronics from Birla Institute of Technology, Mesra.[2]

Career[edit]

Shaji joined Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) in 1987 as part of the U R Rao Satellite Centre.[2] She has worked on multiple satellite programmes, and was the Associate Project Director of Resourcesat-2A.[2][6]

Personal life[edit]

Shaji lives in Bangalore with her mother and daughter.[2] Her husband works in Dubai, and her son is a scientist in the Netherlands.[2]
