Mohammed Shiyas (born 1977) is an Indian politician serving as the member of the legislative assembly (MLA) for the Kochi constituency in the Kerala Legislative Assembly.[1] A leader of the Indian National Congress, he was elected in the 2026 Kerala Legislative Assembly election, wresting the seat from the CPI(M).[2] He currently serves as the president of the Ernakulam District Congress Committee (DCC).[3]
Early life and education[edit | edit source]
Mohammed Shiyas was born to Marakkar in Aluva, Ernakulam district.[4] He is a graduate and has been involved in social work and political activism from a young age, rising through the ranks of the Indian Youth Congress.[5]
Political career[edit | edit source]
Shiyas has been a key organizational figure for the Congress party in Ernakulam district. As the DCC president, he led various protests and political campaigns against the state government, which resulted in numerous political cases being registered against him.[5][6]
In the 2026 Kerala Assembly elections, he was fielded by the Congress in the Kochi constituency, which had been held by the LDF since 2016. In a closely contested election, Shiyas polled 64,318 votes, defeating the incumbent MLA K. J. Maxy of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) by a margin of 8,188 votes.[7][8] His victory was seen as a significant win for the UDF in the coastal urban belt of Ernakulam.[3]
