Mir (Urdu: مير‎) is a Kashmiri Sunni Muslim family name with origins in the Kashmir Valley. Descendants of Emperor Shah Mir. Mir surname, unlike many surnames in the Kashmir valley is used exclusively by the Kashmiri Muslims.[1]

Subcastes[edit]

Many sub castes and compounded surnames extend from this caste, which include Mirwaiz, Mirwani, Mirani, Mirchandani and Mirpuri. The name Mir is also present in Azad Kashmir, specially in the Neelum Valley.
