Shakumbhari or Lonia Chauhan (or Lunia) are a Hindu Chauhan Rajput, found in the state of Uttar Pradesh in India.

Origins and status[edit | edit source]

Originally, the Loniya Chauhan or shakumbhari Chauhan were resident in Rajasthan and ruled on wide area of rajsthan, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh. The notable thing is, The Luni river is a major river of Rajsthan and India's largest inland river also,flows and join to the sambhar lake. In the past, the Princely states were commonly known by their location and later this is used to called their branch like Hadoti, Sikar, Jhalawar, Sirohi,Luni or Sambhari, Songara, Nadol, Bhadawar etc. This was the common in rajput to use their locality . According to Bijolia inscription , Chauhan clan belongs to Solar dynasty while Prithiraj raso claims them from Fire (Agni kul) dynasty. But now They are known as [1]

Present circumstances[edit | edit source]

A huge population of Loniya Chauhan Rajput live in uttar pradesh. This can be seen in the caste census of during British rule. There most concentration can be found in Pratapgarh, Gorakhpur , Maharajganj and Varanasi district in uttar pradesh. In 1883 Loniya formed a caste association called the Akhilbhartiya Shree Rajput Dharmpracharniya Mahasabha, under the leadership of Thakur Lalamathura Prasad Singh. The association later changed its name to Shree Rajput Heetkarni Mahasabha and in 1984 it merged into the Akhil Bharatiya Kshatriya Mahasabha at Pratapgarh, Uttar Pradesh.[1][2]
