Lieutenant Commander (Lt Cdr) is a military rank used by the Indian Navy and several other naval forces. In the Indian Navy, it is a commissioned officer rank senior to Lieutenant and junior to Commander.[1]

In the Indian Navy, Lieutenant Commander is the third commissioned officer rank above Sub-lieutenant and Lieutenant, and below Commander. The rank is abbreviated as Lt Cdr.[1]
The rank is placed at Defence Pay Matrix Level 11. Indian Navy recruitment material lists the rank above Lieutenant, which is Level 10B, and below Commander, which is Level 12A.[2]
Lieutenant Commanders serve in appointments across the Indian Navy's branches and specialisations. Their duties vary according to their branch, qualification and appointment. Officers may serve in operational, technical, administrative or other naval roles.
The rank insignia consists of the insignia prescribed by the Indian Navy for Lieutenant Commander.[1]
Equivalent ranks[edit | edit source]
Lieutenant Commander is generally classified as a senior officer rank in naval rank structures. In armed forces that use equivalent inter-service ranks, it corresponds broadly to Major in an army or air force.
The rank is classified as OF-3 in the NATO rank structure in systems where the corresponding naval rank is designated OF-3.[3]

Lieutenant Commander is used in a number of naval forces, although its position, insignia, duties and promotion arrangements vary between countries. In many naval rank systems it is positioned between Lieutenant and Commander.
The rank is used by, among others, the Royal Navy, United States Navy, Royal Canadian Navy, Royal Australian Navy, Pakistan Navy, Bangladesh Navy, Sri Lanka Navy, Royal New Zealand Navy and several other naval and maritime forces.
In the United States Navy, Lieutenant Commander is designated O-4 and is senior to Lieutenant and junior to Commander. The rank is also used by the United States Coast Guard and certain other United States uniformed services.[4]
In the Royal Navy, the rank was formally established in 1914. It developed from earlier arrangements under which senior lieutenants could command smaller vessels or hold responsibilities associated with the command of a vessel or establishment.
Duties[edit | edit source]
The duties of a Lieutenant Commander depend on the navy, branch and appointment. In many navies, officers of the rank serve as department heads, executive officers or commanding officers of smaller vessels and establishments. In naval aviation, officers of the rank may also hold departmental or operational appointments.
Insignia[edit | edit source]
The design of Lieutenant Commander insignia differs between naval forces. The Indian Navy uses its own rank insignia and uniform regulations, while other navies use their respective national systems.[1]
