Reception[edit]

Due to its release after Sathyaraj's blockbuster hit, Walter Vetrivel, this film generated high expectations among Sathyaraj fans and Tamil movie buffs. However, the movie fell short of these expectations and settled as an average grosser. The Indian Express called it a "crude remake" of his previous film Ezhai Jaathi.[3] New Straits Times wrote "Kattalai will go down well with Sathyaraj fans but for those who are not particularly thrilled by his presence, you may find it difficult to shake off that deja vu feeling that you have seen all these before".[4]
