Jiu-Hwa Lo Upshur (born c. 1937) is a Chinese-American historian and professor emerita of history at Eastern Michigan University (EMU). She is best known for her contributions to world history education, having co-authored major textbooks and edited reference works widely used in global studies. Upshur’s work also emphasizes civic education and cross-cultural understanding.[1]
Early life and education[edit | edit source]
Upshur was born in China and spent her childhood in India and Australia.[2] She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Sydney before moving to the United States, where she obtained her Ph.D. in Chinese history from the University of Michigan in 1972. During her studies, she received the Rackham Predoctoral Fellowship and the Barbour Scholarship.[3]
Academic career[edit | edit source]
Upshur joined Eastern Michigan University in 1972, teaching courses in Chinese history and world civilizations. She served on several academic committees and was recognized for her interdisciplinary teaching methods that connected political science, art, and anthropology.[4]
In 2022, Upshur donated US$1 million to EMU to establish the Jiu-Hwa Lo Upshur Center for Civic Education, dedicated to promoting civic responsibility, democracy, and global awareness.[5]
