The Indian Medical Association (IMA) is a national voluntary organisation of physicians in India, which looks or cares after the interest of doctors or the well being of the community at large. It was established in 1928[2] as the All India Medical Association, renamed "Indian Medical Association" in 1930. It is a society registered under The Societies Act of India.

Background[edit]

With over 3,054,580 member doctors[3] through more than 1,700 active local branches in 29 States and Union Territories in India,[4] it is the largest association of physicians and medical students in India.

It's headquartered in Calcutta (Kolkata). The general control management and direction of the policy of the Association is vested in the 'Central Council' to which local branches send representatives and which meets once a year to lay down policies. It delegates its powers to a Working Committee (A representative body of all state Branches) for implementation of programmes and activities.[2] This committee meets at least three times a year to execute various activities for welfare of members and the people in matters of health.[5][6][7]

The Indian Medical association is a founder member of the World Medical Association.[8]

Surgeon Dr J.A Jayalal took charge as a national president of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) for the year 2020-2021.[9]

Journal of the Indian Medical Association[edit]

The Journal of the Indian Medical Association, popularly known as JIMA, is indexed in the Index Medicus. It is a monthly journal and has the largest circulation of all the indexed journals in the world with over 240,000 subscribers for its electronic version.[10] The journal is also available in microfilm through Bell & Howels, US.[11] The Journal was founded by Sir Nilratan Sircar, Bidhan Chandra Roy, Kumud Sankar Ray and other scholars and doyens of the medical profession in 1930. The Journal office is in Calcutta.[citation needed]

Indian Medical Association-Junior Doctors' Network[edit]

The Indian Medical Association also includes Indian Medical Association – Junior Doctors Network which is an official wing for junior doctors. This new initiative Indian Medical Association-Junior Doctors Network was started with the goal of bringing all the young doctors of our country under one roof i.e. Indian Medical Association, IMA Headquarters New Delhi. The Junior Doctors' Network is an international platform where junior doctors can facilitate an open dialogue of global events and activities that are relevant to their postgraduate training, and the World Medical Association.[citation needed]

Indian Medical Students' Association[edit]

On 5 October 2013, the Indian Medical Students' Association was inducted as the official student wing of the Indian Medical Association. It claims to have more than 50,000 members from different medical colleges in the country and aims to promote new endeavours among medical students in India.[12][13] The association now includes 25 state chapters throughout the country.[citation needed]
