Grokipedia (Hindi: ग्रोकीपीडिया) is an AI-driven digital encyclopedia created by Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence firm xAI. It went live on 27th October 2025 (21 Kartika 2082 V.S.) and currently hosts approximately 9 lakh machine-generated articles as of 28th October 2025 (22 Kartika 2082 V.S.).

The content is produced and updated by xAI's language model Grok. The Verge claimed, A significant portion of entries are adapted from Wikipedia, with some appearing almost identical.[1] Each article carries a note stating it has been verified for accuracy by Grok. Musk has described Grokipedia as a Wikipedia alternative aimed at eliminating what he calls propaganda" in the existing platform.

History[edit]

Announcement[edit]

Grokipedia is an AI-generated online encyclopedia developed by xAI. The project was first proposed in September 2025 during Musk's public criticisms of Wikipedia’s alleged ideological biases. The name "Grokipedia" was suggested by David O. Sacks at the All-In podcast conference earlier that month.

Musk described the platform as an AI-powered knowledge base intended to compete with Wikipedia by correcting what he perceived as its biases, inaccuracies, and ideological leanings. Some commentators, such as Gizmodo, drew parallels between Grokipedia and Conservapedia, a conservative alternative to Wikipedia launched in 2006.

On 6 October 2025, Musk announced that an early beta version of Grokipedia would launch later that month. However, the release was briefly delayed in October to improve content quality standards.

Controversy[edit]

Soon after its launch, Grokipedia faced significant criticism regarding its accuracy and biases stemming from hallucinations and possible algorithmic bias.[2][3][4] An article in The Washington Post pointed out entries that lean towards right-wing beliefs or support Musk's opinions.[5] NBC News observed that, unlike the entry on Musk found in Wikipedia, the version on Grokipedia omitted any reference to the controversial hand gesture he made in January 2025, which many interpreted as similar to a Nazi salute. Additionally, both Forbes and Mashable remarked that "certain articles on Grokipedia, including those about the PlayStation 5, automaker Lamborghini, and chipmaker AMD, seem to be almost identical to their Wikipedia counterparts."[6][7]

A representative from the Wikimedia Foundation stated that "the knowledge found on Wikipedia is, and will always be, a product of human effort. ... This human-generated knowledge serves as the foundation for AI companies to produce content; even Grokipedia relies on Wikipedia for its existence." Taha Yasseri, a sociologist and physicist, pointed out in The Conversation that this encyclopedia might also reflect biases similar to those of Wikipedia, despite recognising that Wikipedia’s "framework is intended to reveal and correct such biases." This is because large language models like Grok can mirror the political and other biases inherent in their datasets.[2]

Time magazine noted that the Grokipedia article on Elon Musk sometimes "depicts him in overly enthusiastic terms while downplaying or even omitting various controversies." The magazine also remarked that "Grokipedia offers more comprehensive descriptions of Elon Musk's perspectives, including his notion of a 'woke mind virus,' which he claimed had 'killed' his estranged transgender daughter, who is nonetheless alive." Additionally,[8] Time criticised a segment regarding Elon Musk's health and lifestyle for containing detailed personal information about his daily routines, a type of content that is typically absent from encyclopedias. The Verge characterised the Grokipedia articles about Musk and his enterprises as "airbrushed" versions compared to their Wikipedia counterparts. Matteo Wong, writing for The Atlantic, highlighted that in the Grokipedia entry on Adolf Hitler, there is an emphasis on his "rapid economic achievements" instead of significant incidents like the Holocaust, as Grokipedia presents the white genocide conspiracy theory as if it were a current event.[9] Furthermore, Futurism reported that the Grokipedia entry regarding the Tesla Cybertruck contained language that both promoted the vehicle and criticised the media's coverage of it and Tesla.[10]

Larry Sanger, a co-founder of Wikipedia and a prominent critic of the platform, reacted to the launch of Grokipedia by stating, “It’s still uncertain whether it’s genuinely better than Wikipedia. However, for now, I would have to say 'maybe!'”[11] Sanger pointed out that while the Grokipedia entry about him included accurate and intriguing information not present in the related Wikipedia article, it also exhibited hallucinations and contained mistakes.[12] Meanwhile, Wikipedia co-founder Jimmy Wales remarked that using large language models could result in Grokipedia featuring "significant errors."[13]
