English: This is a video of the late Musamoni Panigrahi singing bahuna, songs that brides and other women in the family used to sing during her departure post-wedding. In patriarchal traditions, a bride would leave for her in-laws after the wedding and live a life of hardship under the strict order of her in-laws.Bahuna reflects the anticipation of a bride's life while cherishing the love and care she would have received from her family before getting married. Would-be brides used to be taught by mothers and grandmothers about the tone and lyrics of these songs. These songs are no longer sung and are hardly documented. The lyrics of such songs are unique and different in each place, and are quire melodramatic. |
