Vishvanatha Daivajna (active c. 1578–1612 CE) was a 16th and 17th-century Indian Sanskrit astronomer, astrologer, and mathematician. He is best known for his extensive commentaries on classical Indian astronomical treatises, most notably the Grahalaghava of Ganesha Daivajna.
Life and Lineage[edit source]
Vishvanatha belonged to a prominent family of astronomers (Daivajnas) from the Konkan region, who later migrated to Varanasi (Benares). He was the fifth son of the celebrated astronomer Divakara Daivajna.[1] His family belonged to the Bharadwaja gotra. His brothers, including Vishnu Daivajna and Mallari, were also distinguished scholars of Jyotisha (astronomy and astrology).[2]

Vishvanatha was said to be an extraordinary commentator. His works were said to be instrumental in making complex astronomical and planetary computations accessible to later generations of Indian astronomers.
His most notable works include:
- Grahalaghavavivarana (also known as Siddhantarahasya): A detailed and widely studied commentary on the Grahalaghava of Ganesha Daivajna (composed in 1520 CE). This commentary elaborated on the Ganesha-paksha school of planetary parameters and was heavily utilized by panchang makers.[3]
- Commentaries on other astronomical texts such as the Makaranda-sarani and the works of Bhāskara II.
In the 20th century, his Sanskrit commentaries were heavily referenced and republished by modern scholars like Pt. Kapilesvara Shastri through the Kashi Sanskrit Series.[4]
