Viśvasya vṛttāntaḥ (also transliterated as Vishvasya Vrittantah, Vishvasya Vrutantah, Visvasya Vrittantah, or Vishvasya Vrutantam; Sanskrit: विश्वस्य वृत्तान्तः) is an Indian Sanskrit-language daily newspaper published from Surat, Gujarat.[1] It is one of the very few daily newspapers in the world published entirely in Sanskrit, operating in a rare linguistic space alongside other historic publications like Sudharma.

History[edit source]

Viśvasya vṛttāntaḥ was established and officially registered with the Registrar of Newspapers for India (RNI) on 8 December 2011.[1] The newspaper is published by Murtaza I. Khambhatwala under the publishing house M/S Bharti Prakashan. It is edited by Shivraj Jha, who is widely credited under his pen name 'Shantey'. Kamal Kadel and Shivaom Mishra have also served as associate editors (Saha-sampadaka) for the daily.[2]

The primary objective of the newspaper is to promote the Sanskrit language and ensure its relevance in the modern era by presenting contemporary regional, national, and international news in the ancient language.[3]

Content and operations[edit source]

The newspaper is published in a daily format, usually comprising four to six pages. To cater to a diverse readership of Sanskrit scholars, students, and language enthusiasts across India and abroad, it is distributed in print as well as in digital PDF e-paper formats.[4]

The content of Viśvasya vṛttāntaḥ includes:

  • National affairs (Bhāratam / भारतम्)
  • International news (Viśva / विश्व)
  • Women's issues and global achievements (Mahilā Viśva / महिला विश्व)
  • Editorial and opinion columns
  • Coverage of Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS), cultural traditions, and Sanskrit literature.[2]

The language used is standard modern Sanskrit, which adapts contemporary vocabulary for terms related to technology, international diplomacy, modern governance, and sports, demonstrating the utility of Sanskrit as a living medium for daily journalism.[2]

Support and recognition[edit source]

As part of the nationwide efforts to preserve and popularize Sanskrit, Viśvasya vṛttāntaḥ has received financial assistance for the publication of Sanskrit literary and news content under schemes initiated by the Central Sanskrit University (formerly Rashtriya Sanskrit Sansthan). This support is provisioned by the Ministry of Education, Government of India, highlighting the institutional backing for Sanskrit journalism.[5]
