How to Plan a Rajaji National Park Safari from Rishikesh.
Rajaji National Park is a protected area in the Shivalik foothills of Uttarakhand, India. It is also designated as Rajaji Tiger Reserve. The reserve lies in the Haridwar, Dehradun and Pauri Garhwal districts and is managed by the Uttarakhand Forest Department.[1]
History[edit source]
The national park was created in 1983, when three wildlife sanctuaries in the area, Rajaji, Motichur and Chilla, were merged into one protected area.[1] It is named after C. Rajagopalachari, the freedom fighter popularly known as "Rajaji".[1]
In 2015, about 255 square kilometres of adjoining reserve forest was added as a buffer zone, and the combined area of roughly 1,075 square kilometres was declared a tiger reserve under the Wild Life Protection Act, 1972.[1]
Geography[edit source]
The national park itself covers about 820 square kilometres.[1] Including the buffer zone, the tiger reserve covers about 1,075 square kilometres.[1]
Visiting[edit source]
The park is open to day visitors from 15 November to 15 June and is closed from 16 June to 14 November. Visitors enter during two windows, from 6 AM to 10 AM and from 2 PM to 6 PM. Dates, fees and rules are set by the forest department and may change.[1]
