History[edit]
Guru Nanak College of Nursing was spearheaded by Budh Singh Dhahan – a social activist in Punjab who spent 20 years living in Canada. In 1993, the school opened as “Guru Nanak Mission Institute of Nursing.” At the time, it started by offering the 3-year, General Nursing & Midwifery (GNM) diploma.
The school developed ties to University of British Columbia (UBC) School of Nursing through Canada India Education Society (CIES). CIES facilitated a partnership between the two schools, along with Guru Nanak Dev University in Amritsar, between 1998 and 2007. Together, the partnership established a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) degree program at the school.
In 1998, the name of the school changed to Guru Nanak College of Nursing.
In 2008, the Post Basic Bachelor of Science in Nursing (PB BScN) course was added to the school’s offerings.
In 2011, a Master of Science in Nursing (MScN) course was added.
Currently, the college’s BScN, Post Basic BScN and MScN degrees are conferred by Baba Farid University of Health Sciences in Faridkot.
In 2019, Guru Nanak College of Nursing signed an agreement with The Canada-India Centre for Excellence (CICE) in Science, Technology, Trade, and Policy at Carleton University to provide short-term training programs to nurses. These were conducted online and through in-person exchange programs.
By 2021, Guru Nanak College of Nursing graduated 2308 students.
