Cowlas family is a feudal aristocratic and noble family of the erstwhile Princely Hyderabad State. The family served the Nizams of Hyderabad since the First Nizam ul Mulk until the 7th Nizam Mir Osman Ali Khan.[1][2][3]

HistoryEdit

In 1915, the family's ancestor Maulvi Muhammad Jamaluddin Sheikh was appointed by the 7th Nizam of Hyderabad as the Castellan or Kiladar of Kowlas Fort.Kowlas Fort was governed by the Rajput Rajas of Kowlas since the time of the first Nizam, however in 1915, due to the premature death of Raja Durjan Singh, the Kingdom of Kowlas was left heirless, thus the Nizam Mir Osman Ali Khan had appointed a Kiladar to govern Kowlas on behalf of the Nizam.[4][5]

Maulvi Muhammad Jamaluddin Sheikh's family belonged to the Barlas tribe, tracing his descent back to Emir Timur of the Timurid Dynasty.[6] His ancestor Muhammad Jamil Beg served the first Nizam of Hyderabad as a Jamedar.

He was succeeded by his son Moinuddin Sheikh as the 2nd Kiladar of Kowlas. Moinuddin born in 1915 at the Kowlas fort, would graduate from Osmania University with a Masters in Journalism. In 1940, Moinuddin would adopt the surname of Kowlas replacing Sheikh. Alongside the hereditary duties of Kiladar of Kowlas, Moinuddin Kowlas was involved in the politics of his day and age, becoming one of the youngest members of the All-India Muslim League.[7][8][9]

Due to the Annexation of Hyderabad by Indian forces in 1948, Moinuddin Kowlas was detained and had his properties confiscated due to his support of the Pakistan Movement. When released on September 13, he was forced to migrate to Pakistan. When landing in Karachi, Moinuddin decided to anglicize his surname from Kowlas to Cowlas, becoming the progenitor of the Cowlas family.[10][11] Moinuddin Cowlas passed away in 1981, succeeded by his two sons, Waris Cowlas and Haris Cowlas as Titular Kiladar of Kowlas.[12]
