Chandel Dynasty or Chandel Rajput Vansh (Sanskrit: चन्देल) or Chandel Rājvansh refers to the greatest Shaiva dynasty that is supreme among the Kshatriya or Rajputs. The name originates from the combination of the words "Chand" (moon god) and "el" (direct scion of goddess Ila), Initially known as the Haihayas, then Vrishnis, and later the Chedis before the onset of Kali Yuga.[1][2] Families and branches belonging to this dynasty ruled several states in India and held various feudal estates. The main subdivisions of the Chandel dynasty include the Guptas of Magadha (different from Gupta Empire), the Varman dynasty of Bengal, Kalachuris, and Pallavas.

Name[edit]

The word Chandel is made up of two words, (Chand+Ael) Chand meaning Moon and Ael meaning direct descendant of Goddess Ila, grand-daughter of Surya.
