Blindfold chess, also known as sans voir, is a form of chess in which players do not see the board or pieces and must maintain the game position entirely through memory and mental visualization. Moves are communicated through chess notation or verbal announcement.
The earliest known literary reference to blindfold chess-like play is found in ancient Indian Buddhist literature. The Brahmajala Sutta refers to Akasam Astapadam ("Ashtapada played in the sky"), a variant of Ashtapada played without a physical board. A correspondent in the American Chess Bulletin identified this as likely the earliest literary mention of a blindfold chess variant.[1]
Blindfold chess was considered remarkable for centuries and later evolved into a recognized form of competitive and exhibition play. Modern blindfold chess has been studied extensively by psychologists because of the memory and visualization skills it requires.

Monks were addicted to such idle pursuits as eight-row or ten-row games, chess in the air, hopscotch, spillikins, dicing, ball games, guessing letters and other amusements.

In an article entitled Imagining Boards in the Air, published in the American Chess Bulletin, a correspondent identified this passage as likely the earliest literary mention of a blindfold chess variant.[1]
Akasam Astapadam was a variant of Ashtapada, an ancient Indian board game widely regarded as one of the predecessors of Chaturanga, from which chess ultimately developed.[2] Although not identical to modern chess, the reference demonstrates that the concept of playing a strategic board game entirely through mental visualization was already known in ancient India.[1]
The reference is notable because it predates by many centuries the better-documented blindfold chess exhibitions of the medieval and modern eras. Historians of board games have frequently cited India as the birthplace of several early strategy games, including Ashtapada and later Chaturanga. The mention of a version played "in the sky" suggests that participants were expected to maintain the game position mentally rather than relying on a physical board.
Early documented blindfold chess[edit | edit source]
The earliest named individual associated with blindfold chess in surviving chess literature is Sa'id ibn Jubayr (665–714 CE), who was reported to play without the use of a material board.[3] His name appears in historical accounts from the early Islamic world and is frequently cited by chess historians as the earliest known practitioner of boardless chess play.
During the medieval period, chess flourished throughout the Islamic world, where players and scholars contributed significantly to the game's theory and development. Blindfold play appears to have been regarded as a demonstration of exceptional memory and analytical ability. Although surviving accounts are limited, references to players conducting games without sight of a board indicate that the practice was already known centuries before it became a public spectacle in Europe.
H. J. R. Murray also recorded accounts of Central Asian horsemen who played chess while riding side by side, announcing moves verbally without the use of a board or pieces.[4] These accounts suggest that forms of mental chess were used not only as displays of skill but also as practical recreations during travel.
In Europe, blindfold chess became popular as a means of handicapping stronger players and demonstrating exceptional memory and analytical ability. The first known blindfold chess exhibition in Europe took place in Florence in 1266. Later accounts describe blindfold play as both an intellectual curiosity and a public entertainment, with masters using such exhibitions to showcase their abilities and attract patrons.
By the eighteenth century, blindfold chess had become sufficiently established that leading masters began performing simultaneous blindfold exhibitions. These displays laid the foundation for the record-breaking exhibitions and scientific interest that would characterize blindfold chess in the modern era.

In 1783, François-André Danican Philidor demonstrated the ability to play three blindfold games simultaneously. His exhibitions attracted widespread attention throughout Europe and helped establish blindfold chess as a public spectacle.[5]
Contemporary newspapers treated Philidor's performances as extraordinary intellectual achievements. According to later accounts, Philidor developed his visualization abilities by mentally reconstructing chess positions while lying awake at night. His success convinced many observers that blindfold chess represented one of the highest demonstrations of human memory and concentration.
The popularity of Philidor's exhibitions inspired later generations of masters. Throughout the nineteenth century, blindfold chess increasingly became associated with professional chess culture, with exhibitions attracting spectators who viewed them as both competitive events and demonstrations of mental skill.
By the nineteenth century, masters such as Paul Morphy, Louis Paulsen, Joseph Henry Blackburne, and Wilhelm Steinitz further expanded the practice. Simultaneous blindfold exhibitions became common features of chess clubs, tournaments, and public events, helping to popularize the game among wider audiences.[5]

Improvements in chess organization, the growth of chess clubs, and increased newspaper coverage contributed to the popularity of blindfold exhibitions throughout Europe and North America.
Among the most celebrated practitioners was Paul Morphy, who in 1858 conducted a blindfold exhibition in Paris against eight strong opponents, scoring six wins and two draws. The display attracted considerable attention and reinforced Morphy's reputation as one of the strongest players of his era. His performances demonstrated that blindfold play could be conducted successfully against experienced competitors rather than merely as a novelty against weaker opposition.
Another influential figure was Louis Paulsen, whose exceptional powers of concentration enabled him to conduct numerous simultaneous blindfold games. Paulsen's exhibitions helped establish standards for large-scale blindfold displays and influenced later masters who sought to expand the limits of human memory and visualization.
Joseph Henry Blackburne, one of the most popular chess masters of the Victorian era, became particularly renowned for blindfold exhibitions. Nicknamed "The Black Death", Blackburne reportedly played as many as sixteen blindfold games simultaneously. His extensive tours throughout Britain and abroad brought blindfold chess to large public audiences and demonstrated its commercial appeal as a form of entertainment.
The first World Chess Champion, Wilhelm Steinitz, also practiced blindfold chess. In 1867 he conducted a simultaneous blindfold exhibition in Dundee, playing six opponents simultaneously and scoring three wins and three draws. Such exhibitions were often an important source of income for professional masters and helped sustain chess careers before the establishment of substantial tournament prize funds.
One of the earliest known female practitioners of blindfold chess was Ellen Gilbert, an American player active during the 1870s. Gilbert became famous for her remarkable memory and visualization skills, particularly in correspondence chess. Her blindfold performances challenged contemporary assumptions about women's participation in competitive chess and earned her recognition among leading players of the period.
By the end of the nineteenth century, blindfold exhibitions had become an established feature of chess culture. Newspapers frequently reported on simultaneous displays, and leading masters were increasingly judged not only by their tournament achievements but also by their ability to perform complex blindfold feats.

As blindfold chess gained popularity, masters began competing to establish new records for the largest number of simultaneous games played without sight of the board.
In 1900, Harry Nelson Pillsbury conducted a blindfold exhibition involving twenty simultaneous chess games in Philadelphia. Pillsbury was widely regarded as one of the greatest blindfold players of his generation. In addition to his chess exhibitions, he became famous for demonstrations of memory in which he recalled long lists of words, numbers, and other information after brief exposure.
Pillsbury later attempted the unusual feat of conducting fifteen blindfold chess games and fifteen blindfold checkers games simultaneously. Such performances reinforced the public perception that blindfold masters possessed extraordinary mental abilities.
The record was subsequently advanced by Richard Réti, one of the leading figures of the hypermodern school of chess. Réti's exhibitions demonstrated both remarkable memory and the growing prestige associated with blindfold records.

The twentieth century witnessed significant advances in simultaneous blindfold chess and produced some of the most famous exhibitions in the history of the game.
Among the foremost practitioners was Alexander Alekhine, who combined world-class playing strength with exceptional powers of visualization. In 1924, at the Alamac Hotel in New York City, Alekhine played twenty-six simultaneous blindfold games against a field that included strong masters such as Isaac Kashdan and Hermann Steiner. He scored sixteen wins, five losses, and five draws, in what has frequently been described as one of the strongest blindfold exhibitions ever organized.
The following year, Alekhine improved upon this achievement in Paris, where he faced twenty-eight teams of players simultaneously and achieved a score of twenty-two wins, three losses, and three draws. These performances attracted international attention and helped popularize blindfold chess among both chess enthusiasts and the general public.
In the same period, Richard Réti conducted a simultaneous blindfold exhibition against twenty-nine opponents in São Paulo, surpassing Alekhine's numerical record. Réti reportedly joked about his imperfect memory after accidentally leaving his briefcase behind following the exhibition.
On 16 July 1934, Alekhine established another world record in Chicago by conducting thirty-two simultaneous blindfold games. Acting as referee was Edward Lasker, who later documented the event. Alekhine scored nineteen wins, four losses, and nine draws, further strengthening his reputation as the leading blindfold player of his era.
The next major milestone was achieved by George Koltanowski, who on 20 September 1937 conducted thirty-four simultaneous blindfold games in Edinburgh. The exhibition lasted approximately thirteen hours and resulted in twenty-four wins and ten losses. Koltanowski's achievement attracted widespread coverage and established a new benchmark for future challengers.
Koltanowski became one of the most influential ambassadors of blindfold chess. Beyond his simultaneous exhibitions, he was famous for conducting blindfold Knight's Tour demonstrations and for promoting chess throughout North America. His performances helped sustain public interest in blindfold chess during the mid-twentieth century.
A further advance came from Miguel Najdorf, who conducted a record exhibition against forty opponents in Rosario, Argentina, in 1943. Najdorf scored thirty-six wins, one draw, and three losses. The event carried personal significance because he hoped the publicity would reach family members in Europe from whom he had become separated during World War II.
Najdorf improved his own record in 1947 in São Paulo, where he played forty-five simultaneous blindfold games, scoring thirty-nine wins, four draws, and two losses. Although some contemporaries questioned aspects of the conditions under which the exhibitions were conducted, modern chess historians generally regard the records as legitimate.
The Hungarian master János Flesch later claimed a new record in 1960 by playing fifty-two simultaneous blindfold games in Budapest. However, debate surrounded the exhibition because Flesch was permitted to recount game scores verbally during play. As a result, historians have differed in their assessments of the record's significance.
In the same year, Koltanowski established another notable achievement in San Francisco, where he played fifty-six consecutive blindfold games at a rapid pace of approximately ten seconds per move. The exhibition lasted nine hours and resulted in fifty wins and six losses, demonstrating both endurance and exceptional visualization ability.

Blindfold chess continued to attract interest in the twenty-first century, particularly through record attempts and elite-level tournaments. Although large simultaneous exhibitions became less common than during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, advances in communication technology and growing public interest in cognitive performance helped sustain the tradition.
In November 2010, German master Marc Lang established a new European blindfold record in Sontheim an der Brenz, Germany, by playing thirty-five opponents simultaneously over a period of approximately twenty-three hours. Lang scored nineteen wins, thirteen draws, and three losses.
The following year, Lang improved upon his own achievement by conducting forty-six simultaneous blindfold games, scoring twenty-five wins, nineteen draws, and only two losses. The exhibition was widely reported in chess media and was regarded as one of the most significant blindfold performances of the modern era.
On 3 December 2016, Timur Gareyev conducted a blindfold exhibition against forty-eight opponents while wearing a blindfold and riding an exercise bicycle. Gareyev scored thirty-five wins, seven draws, and six losses. The exhibition received extensive international media coverage and established a new benchmark for modern simultaneous blindfold play.
Despite such achievements, blindfold chess in the twenty-first century has increasingly focused on elite competition rather than record-setting exhibitions. Many leading grandmasters have continued to demonstrate blindfold skills through specialized tournaments and exhibition events.

Throughout its history, blindfold chess has been associated with debates concerning mental fatigue and potential health effects. Because players must maintain complete mental representations of multiple positions while calculating variations, blindfold play is generally regarded as more demanding than conventional chess.
During the early twentieth century, some chess authorities expressed concern that extensive blindfold exhibitions could be harmful to a player's health. These concerns became sufficiently widespread that simultaneous blindfold exhibitions were officially prohibited in the Soviet Union during the 1930s. Soviet officials regarded large-scale blindfold displays as potentially damaging because of the sustained concentration they required.
Former World Chess Champion Mikhail Botvinnik also warned against excessive blindfold play. Although he acknowledged its value as a training exercise, he believed that repeated large-scale exhibitions could impose unusual mental strain on players.
Modern assessments generally regard blindfold chess as safe when practiced in moderation. Nevertheless, players frequently report greater levels of mental exhaustion than in ordinary chess games, particularly during simultaneous exhibitions involving numerous opponents. The cognitive demands arise not only from calculating moves but also from continuously updating multiple mental representations of chess positions.

Subsequent studies by cognitive scientists explored how skilled players maintain accurate mental representations of numerous positions simultaneously.
Modern research generally concludes that expert blindfold performance depends primarily upon pattern recognition rather than extraordinary raw memory. Strong players are able to encode positions as familiar strategic structures rather than as collections of individual pieces. Experienced blindfold players often report that they do not consciously visualize a photographic image of the board. Instead, they maintain an abstract representation consisting of piece locations, tactical relationships, and strategic features. In simultaneous blindfold exhibitions, players typically review each game sequentially and update their mental representation after every reported move. Among the most successful competitors were Vladimir Kramnik, Viswanathan Anand, Alexei Shirov, Alexander Morozevich, and Levon Aronian. Their performances demonstrated that blindfold chess remained an important aspect of elite chess skill even in the era of computer preparation and advanced analytical tools.
Blindfold events have also featured in competitions such as the SportAccord World Mind Games, where leading grandmasters competed in specialized formats designed to test memory, concentration, and calculation.
The growth of online chess platforms has further expanded opportunities for blindfold play. Many websites and software programs allow users to hide the board while playing or training, making blindfold practice more accessible than at any previous point in history.
