Drafts are pages in the Draft namespace (draftspace) where new articles may be created and developed before being moved to the article namespace (mainspace). Drafts provide editors with a place to work on new articles, make improvements, and receive feedback before an article is published in the main namespace.
Creating a draft before creating an article in the main namespace is optional for editors who are permitted to create articles directly. Editors may also choose to create draft pages in their userspace.
Drafts are intended to be works in progress. They may be edited by their creators and by other Bharatpedia editors, and they remain subject to Bharatpedia's general editing and content policies.
Creating and editing drafts[edit | edit source]
Anyone who is permitted to edit Bharatpedia may create and edit draft pages, including editors who are not logged in where the site's editing permissions allow it. Draft pages use the Draft: namespace prefix before the normal page title and have an associated draft talk page.
Editors using VisualEditor can edit drafts using the same visual editing interface available for other pages.
When a draft is ready for publication, an editor with the necessary permissions can move it to the main namespace by using the page-move function. If an editor cannot move a draft because of technical or permission restrictions, assistance may be requested from other experienced editors or through the appropriate Bharatpedia support or move-request process.
After you have created your draft page:
- Optionally add the {{Draft article}} template at the top of the draft, where appropriate. The template may be used to identify the subject and help categorize drafts.
- Draft pages should generally not place themselves in article categories until they are ready for publication. Where necessary, categories can be disabled by placing a colon before the word "Category", for example
[[:Category:Living people]]. - Non-free content must comply with Bharatpedia's applicable copyright and media policies. Where such material is not permitted in drafts, it should only be added after the article has been moved to the main namespace and the relevant requirements have been met.
Finding drafts[edit | edit source]
Drafts may not be indexed by search engines in the same manner as published articles. As a result, most readers will not discover draft pages through ordinary web searches.
Drafts can be found directly on Bharatpedia using the site's search and namespace tools. Editors may also use the list of all pages in the Draft namespace, the prefix index, recent changes to the namespace, or other available page-discovery tools.
Drafts may also be organized by subject or status through appropriate categories.
Because the Draft namespace is intended as a place for developing articles, editors may discover existing drafts before creating a new page. When a draft already exists for a subject, editors should generally improve the existing draft rather than creating a duplicate.
Moving drafts to the main namespace[edit | edit source]
Moving a draft to the main namespace makes it available as a normal Bharatpedia article. The move should be carried out when the draft is sufficiently developed and meets Bharatpedia's requirements for articles.
Editors who do not have permission to move pages may request assistance from an editor with the necessary permissions.
A draft may also be submitted through Bharatpedia's article-review process, where such a process is available. The review process allows other editors to assess the draft and suggest or make improvements before it is moved to the main namespace.
An article created in draftspace does not belong to the editor who originally created it. Other editors may edit, move, rename, redirect, merge, improve, or nominate the draft for deletion in accordance with Bharatpedia's policies.
Moving articles to draftspace[edit | edit source]
An existing article may sometimes be moved from the main namespace to the Draft namespace when additional work is needed before it can remain as a published article.
The purpose of moving an article to draftspace is to provide time and space for improvement. It should not be used simply as an alternative way of deleting an article.
After moving an article to draftspace, editors should:
- Notify the article's creator or principal contributor where appropriate.
- Explain, where necessary, the reason the article was moved to draftspace.
- Add relevant talk-page notices or project tags where these may help attract editors interested in improving the article.
- Make the draft available for further editing and, when appropriate, submission for review.
The process may be assisted by Bharatpedia's available editing tools or scripts.
Reasons to move an article to draftspace[edit | edit source]
Common reasons for moving an article to draftspace as an alternative to immediate deletion may include:
- The article was created by an editor with a potential conflict of interest and requires independent review.
- The article contains substantial machine-generated or machine-translated material that requires human review and editing.
- The article concerns an upcoming event, work, or subject that may become suitable for an article but is not yet sufficiently established.
- The article requires substantial improvement in sourcing, structure, neutrality, language, or encyclopedic content before it is suitable for the main namespace.
These examples are not exhaustive. Editors should consider the circumstances of each article and the applicable Bharatpedia policies.
Reasons not to move an article to draftspace[edit | edit source]
Editors should generally avoid moving an article to draftspace when:
- The article has been established in the main namespace for a significant period and there is no clear reason for moving it.
- The article is currently being discussed in a deletion or other formal community process where moving it could interfere with the discussion.
- The article contains copyright violations that must be addressed regardless of namespace.
- There is no realistic prospect that the article can be improved into a suitable encyclopedic article.
- Another editor is actively working on the article, for example under an active construction notice or through recent constructive editing.
- Another editor has clearly established that the page should remain in the main namespace.
- Another editor has objected to or reversed a move to draftspace.
Moving an article against another editor's objection without first seeking consensus may result in a move dispute.
As a result of a deletion discussion[edit | edit source]
An article may be moved to draftspace as part of a community deletion discussion or following a decision that additional work should be undertaken before the article is returned to the main namespace.
When this occurs, editors should identify the relevant discussion and understand the reasons for the move. The draft can then be improved and, where appropriate, submitted through the article-review process for consideration.
Editors working on such drafts may ask other editors for assistance or advice.
Objections[edit | edit source]
Moving an article to draftspace should generally be an action that editors reasonably expect to be uncontroversial. If another editor objects to the move, further moves should normally be avoided until the appropriate namespace has been discussed and a consensus has been reached.
Discussion may take place on the article's talk page or through another appropriate Bharatpedia community process.
An article should not be repeatedly moved between the main namespace and draftspace simply to establish which version remains in place. Where disagreement exists, editors should seek consensus instead.
Deleting drafts[edit | edit source]
Drafts are works in progress and are not expected to meet every standard of a finished article when they are first created. For this reason, the fact that a draft is incomplete does not by itself mean that it should be deleted.
Editors should generally be given a reasonable opportunity to develop a draft, improve its sourcing, establish context, correct language, and address other problems.
Drafts may nevertheless be deleted when they meet Bharatpedia's applicable deletion criteria.
Speedy deletion[edit | edit source]
The applicable general criteria for speedy deletion may also apply to drafts.
Examples of drafts that may qualify for speedy deletion include pages that are clear copyright violations, vandalism, personal attacks or harassment, tests, or unambiguous advertising or promotional material.
A draft should not be deleted merely because it is incomplete or requires improvement.
Abandoned drafts[edit | edit source]
Drafts that have not received substantive editing for an extended period may become eligible for deletion under Bharatpedia's policy on abandoned drafts, if such a policy applies.
Before deleting an apparently abandoned draft, editors should consider whether the page has a reasonable prospect of being developed into a useful article and whether preservation or restoration is appropriate.
Where Bharatpedia provides a restoration or undeletion process, deleted drafts may be restored upon request when appropriate.
Promising drafts[edit | edit source]
A draft that appears to have potential may be marked as a promising draft where Bharatpedia provides an appropriate template or mechanism for doing so.
Such a designation does not permanently exempt a draft from deletion. Editors should still assess whether the draft remains active, useful, and capable of becoming a suitable article.
Miscellany for deletion[edit | edit source]
Drafts that do not meet the criteria for speedy deletion may still be nominated for deletion through Bharatpedia's community deletion process.
A draft may be deleted when there is a community consensus that it meets an applicable reason for deletion and that it is unlikely to become a viable article.
The absence of demonstrated notability or completeness at the draft stage does not, by itself, necessarily require deletion. Editors should consider whether the identified problems can reasonably be addressed through further work.
Redirects from drafts moved to the main namespace[edit | edit source]
Redirects created as a result of moving a page from the Draft namespace to another namespace should generally be retained unless there is a specific reason for their deletion under Bharatpedia's applicable policies.
Redirects can preserve links to the former draft title and help editors and readers locate the published article.
