There have been assassinations of three of the most well-known Gandhis in independent India, namely of Mahatma Gandhi, of Indira Gandhi, and of her son Rajiv Gandhi.

- Of Indira Gandhi by two Sikh bodyguards on October 31, 1984 at her residence in Safdarjung Road, New Delhi
- Of Rajiv Gandhi by an LTTE suicide bomber on May 21, 1991 in Sriperumbudur, Chennai, Tamil Nadu
