Arindom Chatterjee


Arindom Chatterjee, also known by the mononym Arindom, is an Indian music director, singer, and composer noted for his compositions in commercial Bengali movies. Hailed as a talented composer in the Bengali film industry, also known as Tollywood, Arindom had a professional initiation at the age of twenty-two and has been delivering memorable compositions and a significant number of musical hits in his illustrious career of twelve years. His debut movie, Bojhena Shey Bojhena in 2012 fetched him the Best Debutant Composer and Best Album of the Year Award. In addition to movies, Aridom has composed title tracks and music for scores of Bengali television serials like "Thik Jeno Love Story".

May 2014 saw the official launch of the football team Atletico De Kolkata and in the same year Arindom composed the captivating official theme song of Atletico De Kolkata for the Indian super league, Fatafati Football. The song was sung by the Indian singer Arijit Singh and became an instant success and a favorite of football fans as well as general public. In August 2019, East Bengal Football Club approached Arindom to compose their Centenary Anthem, the result of which is the famous number Eksho Bochor Dhore, also sung by Arijit Singh.

Arindom as a music director and musical resource collaborator has introduced global sounds to the regional music industry in Kolkata. He regularly works with international artists from South Asia, the United Kingdom, and the Middle East. One of the key features of his music is the use of instruments and styles that marks the confluence of various musical cultures. His signature blends of ethnic, pop, and world music styles is highly innovative not only in the context of the Bengali film industry, but also national music. Arindom has worked relentlessly for a decade to confer a new identity to Indian music and is now being followed by young and emerging musicians in the region. He is a familiar name to music enthusiasts both in India and well as among the global South Asian diaspora.

Acknowledging his contribution to music, in 2020 the Arts Council of England endorsed Arindom as an exceptional Global Talent, an accolade conferred on individuals with outstanding prospects for contribution in their respective fields.

Early lifeEdit

Born in Kolkata, Arindom’s family has a background in both business and fine arts. His father Buddhadeb Chatterjee was a businessman and his mother, Mita Chatterjee is a trained singer herself. It is through her that Arindom and his brother was first introduced to music. However, besides receiving a commencing training in music from his mother, Arindom claims to be a self-taught artist. He completed his education with a bachelor’s degree in computer applications from Techno India University, Kolkata, India.

Arindom introduced his talent to Tollywood through his debut compositions in the television serials Nayika and Josh, both televised in Sananda TV in 2011. His hugely successful launch as a music composer in movies came through Bojhena Shey Bojhena (Dir. Raj Chakraborty) under the reputed banner of Shree Venkatesh Films. The album of Bojhena Shey Bojhena won the best album of the year in 2013 and heralded a new scene in Bengali film music, where the instant and significant hit numbers dominated the charts for years to come. Since then, Arindom has worked as a front-line composer in a large number of cinematic projects. Dhaka Attack (2017) is an example of musical collaboration between India and Bangladesh through movies. Arindom worked with the famous Bangladeshi singer Minar Rahman for the song ‘Eka Din’ from the movie Fidaa (2018) and the number gained immense popularity. Arindom’s versatility is apparent in his wide variety of compositions catering to a spectrum of audience with diverse tastes. His composition Bhutu Bhaijaan from the movie Haami (2018) demonstrated Arindom’s proficiency in composing music for children. The catchy and fun number became immensely popular both among his young and matured audience. Arindom has significantly broadened the horizon of the regional film industry through his collaborations with notable Bollywood singer like Vishal Dadlani and the Indian rapper, dancer, singer, and composer Raftaar for the title track of Tollywood thriller, One (2017). In a pioneering project, the famous Pakistani singer Atif Aslam lent his voice for the first time to a Bengali movie Cockpit (2017) through Arindom’s composition Mithe Alo Arindom’s second film Borbaad released in 2014 gifted his followers with another round of hit songs with the worth mentioning number Parbona, sung by Arijit Singh, which is popular even today. After the success of ‘Parbona’ the composer and singer duo of Arindom and Arijit Singh has delivered commendable award-winning hits like Egiye De, ‘’ Thik Emon Ebhabe Tomake Chai’, Jodi Bolo, Tomar Dyakha Nai, Bhalobasa Jak, which ruled the hearts of music lovers for a considerable period of time. In 2020, Arindom’s composition Shuney Ne from the movie Love, Aaj Kaal Porsu (2020), received an overwhelming response and went on to become a significant romantic hit of the year. Besides composing, Aridom is also an accomplished singer with a voice that is adored by his fans. His numbers Hotey Parey Na for Bolo Dugga Maiki (2017), Bhalobeshey Kono Bhul for Bindaas (2014), Bol Na Re Mon for Gangster (2016), Borbad Hoyechi Ami for Borbaad (2014) has proved time and again is versatility and popularity as a singer. In addition to singing his own compositions, Arindom has shown his talent in rearranging and singing Rabindra Sangeet, the songs of the maestro Rabindranath Tagore. While this effort reinvents the timeless creations of Tagore and maintains their popularity among today’s youth, it also demonstrates Arindom’s dexterity as a composer and artist in experimenting with different genres of music.
