Andaman Law College (ALC) is a government law school in Port Blair, India.[1] It was established in 2016 by the Andaman & Nicobar Islands Legal Education Society (ANILES) under Andaman & Nicobar Administration, and is entirely government-funded.[2] It is run by the ANILES with Hon'ble Lt. Governor as its president, Hon'ble Chief Secretary as its Chairman and the Law Secretary as its Vice Chairman. The institute has a moderately sized interim campus in Transport Bhawan, Phoenix Bay, Port Blair.

Organization and administration[edit]

There are 10 professors, including the principal, who are recruited according to University Grants Commission norms by a six-member board.[3] The college is affiliated to Pondicherry University[4] and approved by the Bar Council of India.[5]

Academics[edit]

The college admits 45 students for the graduate program of Bachelor of Laws (B.A.LL.B.) annually.[6][7][8]

Controversies[edit]

On 12 April 2021, the office of Andaman Law College issued a circular under the signature of Principal (Andaman Law College) instructing male and female students to sit separately. However before the issuing of circular the faculty verbally instructed all the male and female student to sit separately under the oral order of the Principal Mr. M.S. Soundara Pandian. On the spot some students in that session vocally opposed his instruction. After this incident, the college issued the above mentioned circular. One of the nationally circulating magazine "Live Wire" covered discriminatory act of Andaman Law College Administration and termed this act as "Pandemic Sexism". A Student said to Live Wire Team that :

″I can’t believe we are being asked to follow such a rule in the 21st century, in 2021, and that too in a law college – all in the middle of a pandemic when we should have been thinking about other issues″

As these kind of non-constitutional act is unexpectable and also unacceptable by an institution of Law. This kind of Decision is against Students Liberty.[9]

Student Activities[edit]

Every year, the students of law college celebrate Freshers day in odd semester and Annual day in even semester.[10][11] The college organised National Seminar on Socio-Legal Rights of Tribals in Andaman & Nicobar Islands: Issues & Challenges on 16 & 17 March 2018.[12] The law professors provide 100% free legal aid every Wednesday afternoon in the Legal Aid Clinic of the college regardless of income, race, sex and domicile.[13] The Students of Andaman Law College are also engaged in Social work, in the year of 2018 when state of Kerala was suffering from a flood the students of Andaman Law College contributed in ABVP'S Kerala flood Relief funds. The fundraising was led by K Sneha 3rd year student of ALC along with Roban Antony state Executive member ABVP ANI.[14]
