Ammayariyathe (transl. Without Mother knowing) is an Indian television crime drama thriller series written by Pradeep Panicker and directed by Praveen Kadakkavoor. The show premiered on 22 June 2020, and airs on Malayalam General Entertainment Channel Asianet, and is also available on the digital platform Disney+Hotstar.[1] It airs at 7:30 pm on Asianet and is also available on Disney+Hotstar.[2] Ammayariyathe portrays the story of a mother and daughter separated by unfortunate circumstances.[3]

Plot[edit]

Ammayariyathe portrays the story of an orphan girl named Aleena Peter, raised by Adv. Peter Tharakan by providing courage and love. Aleena later sets out to find her estranged mother Neeraja Mahadevan, a famous novelist, under Peter's guidance. Initially, Aleena belives that her mother had abandoned her, and therefore she wants to take revenge on her. Due to this, she creates problems in Neeraja's family.

After a series of incidents, Mayor Sulekha uncovers Neeraja's past to Aleena. Neeraja was gang-raped after escaping a drastic situation in which her father was killed by his political rivals and the next target was her as she was his witness of the murder. She became pregnant and gave birth to a baby girl while being in a coma, not aware of anything happening in the world outside, or even in herself. For securing her daughter's life mayor Sulekha had given the baby to a man for nurturing her who is later revealed as a drunkard. He threw the girl in a place where waste is dumped. That baby was taken and raised by Peter naming her 'ALEENA'. Aleena is shattered to know the truth. Meanwhile, Neeraja develops hatred towards Aleena after knowing that all the blasts in the family occurred due to her. A shattered Aleena later makes up her mind to take revenge against the three evil-minded guys who acted the cruelty towards Neeraja.

Aleena writes a novel portraying her and her mother's story and how it was ruined by the hands of 3 drunkard men, thus making the villains tense about their good face being ruined by the truth. Mayor Sulekha tells Aleena that one of them was Vinayachandran, who is a famous actor. Vinayachandran along with his other partner in the crime, Moorthy Chandrashekhar send their goons to attack Aleena from where Ambadi Arjunan, a good-minded and a society helper rescues her. Destiny pulls them closer and closer as Mayor and Joseph sir plan to make Ambadi Aleena's bodyguard. Meanwhile, Neeraja's daughter Aparna and husband Mahadevan uncover the truth and support Aleena and Neeraja. So, Neeraja for the sake of her family accepts Aleena. Aleena narrates her story to Neeraja without disclosing Neeraja's character. Knowing the drastic turn in Aleena's life, Neeraja loves her as her own daughter. Later, the third culprit Sachidanandan, the maternal uncle of Ambadi creates issues between Aleena and Ambadi's relationship, resulting in his own breakdown as Ambadi stands by with Aleena after knowing the truth from her own mouth.

As both Ambadi and Aleena are longing for the other to open up about their relationship, faith plays a game with both of them. Ambadi gets arrested accusing him of trying to murder Rajeevan (the right-hand man of Sachidanandan who agreed to help his boss for money) while going for his SI selection. Aleena rescues Ambadi from the same by using her job of advocate resulting in Ambadi's mother, Draupadi having faith in Aleena and having an interest in the Ambadi-Aleena alliance. Later, Neeraja takes the initiative to air a program with the title "A Cup of Tea With Neeraja". The program interviews famous personalities supporting women empowerment. Later, Neeraja questions a puzzled Aleena about her hatred towards Vinayachandran. Neeraja claims that she will meet Vinayachandran and ask about this. Therefore, a forced Aleena reveals the names of the three criminals who gang raped her mother, to Neeraja. Neeraja decides to support Aleena in the mission and informs the same to Mahadevan and Sulekha. Tensed about Neeraja finding out the truth, Mahadevan warns Aleena about her act. Then a young aspiring novelist Ramakanthan arrives. He befriends Aleena with the help of magazine editor Mamachan Keralabhoomi and then meets Ambadi too and acts as Neeraja's son in front of Moorthy, Vinayan and Sachidanandan by the master brain of Aleena and Ambadi. Later through the novel 'Oru Penninte Kadha' ('The story of a girl') Aleena reveals that it was a girl child. Then Moorthy,Vinayan and Sachidanandan avoid Ramakanthan. Aleena, Neeraja, Mayor Sulekha and Mahadevan tells Aleena's past to Ambadi's mother Draupadi, upon which Draupadi ousts Sachi. Agitated, Sachi plans to kill all his enemies including his sister, but his plan fails.

Vineeth, a PG student in Aparna's college falls in love with Aparna, but he is too scared to reveal it to her. Without knowing about this, Aparna's family plans her marriage with a young man named Giridhar. Giridhar claims to be a businessman settled in Mumbai, but in reality, he is Sachi's goon who was sent by Sachi to kill Mahadevan on the day of Aparna's wedding. Upon realizing that Aparna's marriage has been fixed, Vineeth attempts suicide. However he is saved by his friend Joe. Aparna visits Vineeth in the hospital and asks him to forget her. Joe, upon seeing Vineeth's sadness, meets Giri and tells him that Aparna and Vineeth are in love with each other, in an attempt to sabotage the wedding. However, due to this, Aparna and her family grow hostility towards Vineeth. Ambadi and Aleena doubt the real intentions of Giri and begin to follow him. Giri calls Aparna to his house, planning to rape her, but his plan fails as Ambadi and Aleena reach there following Aparna. Meanwhile, DYSP Dominic Thomas questions Sachi and slaps him in front of Ambadi. An angry Sachi vows to take revenge. A drunk Giri calls Vineeth and reveals to him his true character. Panicked, Vineeth informs this to Ambadi who informs the same to Neeraja. However, Neeraja refuses to believe this and behaves harshly towards Vineeth. In the meantime, Sachi and his friends along with the hitman, continue their plan to execute the murder. Later, the hitman Giri, who is unaware of Sachi’s plan to murder him after the murder of Mahadevan, awaits for a chance to execute the plan. To prevent Ambadi from stopping his plan, Sachi hires goons to kidnap and hide Ambadi away from the auditorium. Ambadi, who overheard the conversation between the goons tactically escapes from them and reaches at the venue. Sachi starts to the auditorium. Meanwhile DYSP arrives at the venue and searches for the hitman. Later, minutes before the auspicious time, he shows the hitman's photo to Ambadi. In the meantime, Giri, the hitman, points his gun at Mahadevan. By the grace of God, Ambadi stops him. To escape from them, Giri runs away from the auditorium, but he gets killed by Sachi, who was waiting outside the auditorium. Later, Ambadi reveals that he and Aleena were aware of this, but were not aware that Giri was the hitman sent by the enemy. Later, Ambadi brings up an alliance before Aleena that is to get Aparna married to Vineeth itself. Ambadi tells Aleena to discuss the alliance with Neeraja and all as it's the only way to protect Aparna’s honour as her 2 marriage alliances are already cancelled. Thus, Vineeth and Aparna ties the knot.

Casting

This show marks the comeback, after 20 years, of actress Keerthi Gopinath, south Indian actor Anand, and his wife Poornima Anand to Malayalam television. Tamil actress Sreethu Nair, Telugu actor Nikhil Nair and Tamil actor Vishnu Unnikrishnan make their Malayalam debut, along with Salmanul Faris in the lead roles. From ep 220 onwards, Vishnu Unnikrishnan replaced Nikhil Nair as Ambadi. After Nikhil Nair took a break from Ammayariyathe, there was a huge uproar.[4] The new promos by Asianet on YouTube were hijacked by hashtag campaigns to bring back Nikhil Nair. The channel successfully brought him back, bowing down to the sentiments of his fans.[5] The show also features famous TV-film actors Boban Alummoodan, T.S.Raju, Reena, and actress Parvathy (child actor - Paarijatham) in prominent roles.
