The 2021–22 season will be the club's second season since the merger in 2020, and their second season in the Indian Super League.[1] The club though initially participated in the 123rd edition of the Calcutta Football League, later withdrew before the start of their campaign.[2][3]

Background[edit | edit source]

The ISL announced a rule limiting the number of foreign players, which would go in effect from the 2021–22 season.[4] The club began the season with the signing of Hyderabad FC player Liston Colaco for an undisclosed fee, which is believed to be record fee paid for an Indian.[5] Finnish International Joni Kauko became their next signing which was completed just a few days after Finland were knocked out of the UEFA Euro 2020.[6] On July 8, the club announced the signing of Hugo Boumous from Mumbai City FC on a record transfer fee which is believed to be $280,000 in a first time ever in India, a 5-year deal.[7][8] On the other hand, ATK Mohun Bagan defender Sandesh Jhingan moved to Croatia after agreeing to a deal with HNK Sibenik.[9]

ATK Mohun Bagan kicked-off their AFC Cup 2021 with a victory against their national rivals Bengaluru FC by 2-0 as captain Roy Krishna and Subhasish Bose found the back of the net.[10][11] On 21 August, ATK Mohun Bagan registered their 2nd win of the AFC Cup 2021 campaign with a win over Maziya S&RC by 3–1.[12] On 24 August, the club produced a 1–1 draw against Bangladesh champions Bashundhara Kings to advance to the inter-zonal semi-final of AFC Cup.[13]

2022 AFC Cup[Note *][edit | edit source]

Calcutta Football League [Note **][edit | edit source]

Summary[edit | edit source]

On 1 July 2021, the Indian Football Association announced that the 2021–22 Calcutta Premier Division will be held in mid-August, without any spectators, adhering to all the protocols due to the COVID-19 pandemic.[14] The committee has also announced that there will be a change in the format of the tournament with 14 teams likely to be divided into two groups and the top 8 teams will reach the knockout stage and play each other in the quarter-finals.[15]

The fixtures for the 2021–22 Calcutta Premier Division was officially announced on 1 August by the Indian Football Association.[16] ATK Mohun Bagan was set to start their campaign on 29 August against George Telegraph.

ATK Mohun Bagan on 28 August 2021 officially informed the CFL organising body, Indian Football Association, that the club will skip the CFL Premier Division A 2021–22, due to the clash of AFC cup Inter-Zonal Playoff semi-finals occurring on 22 September 2021 with the CFL matches. The club also found the danger of having players either injured or getting covid positive due the lack of bio bubbles in the CFL tournament, who have already returned to their home, or have joined the India national football team camp. Head Coach Habas also returned to Spain and said the need of a break by the players after the 3 AFC cup group stage matches involving intense and painstaking work in 7 days.[17][3] Therefore, all the teams were given walkover against ATK Mohun Bagan.[18]
