As of January 2025, Identity Digital assumed management responsibilities for the .ai domain registry, marking a transition in its administrative oversight while maintaining its established technical infrastructure and global accessibility.

The .ai domain registration system permits terms ranging from 2 to 10 years for both initial registration and renewal processes, with transfer operations requiring a 2-year renewal period.[2] Identity Digital maintains authority over this domain extension's management and administrative functions. Domain registration services commenced on 16 February 1995.
Technical specifications for .ai domain names establish minimum character requirements between 1 and 3, varying by registrar, and maximum limits of 63 characters. The accepted character set encompasses uppercase and lowercase alphabetic characters (A-Z, a-z), numerical digits (0-9), and hyphens. As of November 2022, .ai domains do not support Internationalised Domain Name (IDN) characters. The registration process maintains no residency requirements or restrictions, welcoming applications from both local and foreign individuals and entities.[lower-alpha 1] The character set supported for .ai domain names includes A–Z, a–z, 0–9, and hyphen. As of November 2022, .ai domains cannot accommodate IDN characters.[4] There are no requirements for registering a domain, including local and foreign residents.[2]
Domains utilising the .ai extension remain subject to suspension or revocation proceedings when engaged in illicit activities, including trademark or copyright violations. Usage must comply with Anguilla's legal framework.[7] The territory implements the Uniform Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy (UDRP), necessitating arbitration through ICANN-approved dispute resolution service providers. When domains are registered with ICANN-accredited registrars, these entities collaborate with appointed arbitrators, typically resulting in either domain transfer or no action taken.
.ai domains demonstrate transferability to any desired registrar through the Electronic Provisioning Protocol (EPP) registration system.[8] Previously, a whois.ai-based platform facilitated the procurement and auction of expired domains every ten days via standard online procedures.[9] The final auctions on this platform concluded in December 2024, with the scheduled shutdown date of 30 June 2025 having been postponed, as the platform remained operational in subsequent months.[10][11][12][13]

The financial structure for .ai domain registration varies by registrar, with annual fees spanning from 140 US$ (the base rate established by Anguilla) to 200$. As of July 2025, the most valuable .ai domain achieved an undisclosed sale price of 15,00,000 US$ on Escrow.com on 08 November 2023—representing a significant increase from the initial 3,00,000 USD transaction with the same purchaser months prior. Among publicly disclosed high-value sales, fin.ai commanded 10,00,000 USD in March 2025.
On 16 December 2017, the .ai registry implemented Extensible Provisioning Protocol (EPP) support and completed migration of all domains to the EPP system. This technological advancement enabled multiple registrars to offer .ai domain services, coinciding with the domain's growing popularity among artificial intelligence companies and organisations. While this trend predominantly attracts emerging AI startups and organisations, established AI and technology corporations have generally avoided .ai domains—evidenced by DeepMind maintaining its .com domain and Meta redirecting facebook.ai to ai.meta.com.

Revenue generated from .ai domain registrations directly contributes to the Anguilla government treasury. According to a 2018 New York Times report, total revenue from .ai domain sales reached $2.9 million during that year.
The financial impact of .ai domains on Anguilla's economy has grown substantially, with the territory's government collecting approximately 3.2 crore USD in registration fees during 2023. This revenue stream represented over 10% of the territory's gross domestic product. The economic significance of this income source has been projected to increase dramatically, with Infrastructure and Communications Minister Jose Vanterpool predicting that .ai domain revenue would constitute approximately 47% of state income by 2025.
The financial sustainability of .ai domain revenue is reinforced by an impressive 90% renewal rate among .ai domain holders. Additionally, Domaintechnik reports that the 2025 renewal cycle of domains initially registered in 2023 is driving another significant surge in state revenues.
