Mehsi is a town and Nagar Parishad in East Champaran district of the Indian state of Bihar. It is situated in the Tirhut division on the Budhi Gandak river and is connected by road and rail with major towns of north Bihar.
Geography[edit | edit source]
Mehsi is located in the plains of northern Bihar on the banks of the Budhi Gandak. The town lies on the NH 27 and on the Barauni–Gorakhpur line, providing road and railway connectivity between important urban centres of Bihar.

Mehsi as an early administrative centre[edit | edit source]
Mehsi was an important administrative centre of historical Champaran during the early period of British rule. The Bihar and Orissa District Gazetteers: Champaran (1938) describes Mehsi as a village in the south-eastern part of the headquarters subdivision and states that it was the Sadar, or chief civil station, of Champaran when the East India Company first acquired possession of the district.

Mehsi Pargana[edit | edit source]
Mehsi was also associated with the historical Mehsi Pargana and Mehsi Mahal, which formed part of the administrative and zamindari history of the wider Champaran region.
Economy[edit | edit source]
Mehsi has historically been an important local commercial centre. Its economy includes agriculture, horticulture, trade and small-scale industries.
Litchi[edit | edit source]
The area around Mehsi is associated with litchi cultivation and trade. Litchi is an important horticultural product of the wider East Champaran region.
Pearl-button industry[edit | edit source]
Mehsi is also known for its pearl-button industry, which has historically formed part of the town's small-scale industrial economy.

Road[edit | edit source]
National Highway 27 passes through Mehsi and provides road connectivity towards Muzaffarpur, Motihari and other towns of northern Bihar.
Rail[edit | edit source]
Mehsi railway station is situated on the Barauni–Gorakhpur line and provides railway connectivity with other parts of Bihar and eastern India.
