"Noinu Thumleima" (Meitei: ꯅꯣꯢꯅꯨ ꯊꯨꯝꯂꯩꯃ), also known as "Thumkhong Lairembi"[4] (Meitei: ꯊꯨꯝꯈꯣꯡ ꯂꯥꯢꯔꯦꯝꯕꯤ), is the goddess and the female personification of the salt and the natural salt brines in Meitei mythology and religion.[5][6][7] She is a sister of goddesses, Phouleima, Ngaleima and Ereima.[8] She is worshipped by the people for the prosperity of salt, which is a main composition of diet for the mankind.[9][10]
She is considered to be the concubine of Pakhangba, the royal deity.[11]
In popular culture
- "Phouoibi, the rice goddess", a bailad opera, was performed by the Laihui Ensemble in 2009, based on the mythical saga of the goddess and her sisters.[12][13][14][15]
- "Phouoibi Shayon", a 2017 mythology based Manipuri language feature movie was released, based on the story of goddess Thumleima and her sister Phouoibi.[16][17][18][19]
