AHERI/AHERIA (Page No.-40 to 43)
Popularly known as 'Shikari', the Aheri prefer to call themselves Aheri Rajput. Ibbetson (1916) says they were also known as Fie and Ahari. The term Aheri is derived from the Sanskrit word akhttika, meaning hunter. They are presently distributed in the districts of Kota, Jhalawar, Jodhpur, Bharatpur and Alwar in Rajasthan. Their population, according to the 1981 census, is 2736, and they are predominantly a rural community. Harauti, belonging to the central group of Indo-Aryan family of languages, is their mother tongue. They are also conversant in Marwari, and a few can speak Hindi as well. The Devanagari script is commonly used for writing. They are non-vegetarian their staple cereals (jowar, wheat and maize) are supplemented with pulses like masur and moong. They consume home-brewed liquor (mahua).
The Aheria divided into several exogamous gotras, such as the Chechani, the Malu, the Mungra, the Manora, the Bangar, the Hagal, the Somani, the Gagar, the Tapria, the Kabra, the Soni, the Jalu, the Kachhvaya, Somani, the Parmar the Rathor, etc. They generally marry when they are between 16-25 years of age and their marriages are arranged by parents. They are monogamous. Ornaments on the nose, feet, wrists and neck symbolize the marital status of Aheri women in Rajasthan, whereas in the Delhi area green lac bangles and toe rings (chepki) are marriage symbols. Bride price is paid in the form of jewellery. Residence after marriage is virilocal. Divorce (bhaga dena or chor dena) is permittcd by the community council (jati panchayat). Remarriage (nata) is permissible for the widowed or divorced. Levirate is allowed. At present, they conduct a community marriage (sammelan) to minimize expenditure. Most live in nuclear families. Paternal property is equally divided between the male siblings and the eldest son succeeds as the bead of the family. Their women are involved in agriculture and also work as daily wage labourers. Pregnant Women are confined to the home, where the deliveries take place. A naming ceremony is performed. During menarche, girls are secluded for four days. Marriage rituals are performed at the bride's place. Earlier, a member of the community officiated at the marriage rituals, but now either a Katia or a Gamodiya Brahman conducts their marriages. They cremate the dead. Death pollution is observed for twelve days.
Agriculture and forests are the major economic resources for them. Cultivable land is individually owned. Their traditional occupation is hunting and the selling of game in villages and towns. In the 1920s, when hunting was banned, they were forced to adopt agriculture, which is their primary occupation now. Sharecropping and agricultural labour are also, undertaken. Brewing illicit liquor (mahua), cutting trees for catecchu and firewood, collecting tendu leaves, grasscutting and tending cattle for other people are their subsidiary occupations. These are supplemented by some hunting and poaching in the forest, and fishing. According to the latest 41.48 per cent are returned as workers (55.57 per cent males and 24.86 per cent females). Of them, a majority, i.e. 81.68 per cent workers, are engaged in the primary sector (i.e. 55.95 per cent in cultivation and 25.73 as agricultural labour); 4.58 per cent workers are engaged in manufacturing processing etc. A mere 0.44 per cent are engaged in forestry, hunting, etc. and 1.41 per cent in trade and commerce, etc. This indicates their affiliation to their traditional occupation of collection and the sale of forest produce. The remaining 11.89 percent workers are engaged in other services. Within the village, the Aheria barter things, whereas cash transactions are made outside the village. The jati panchayat at the village level and the jati sabha at the regional level exercise social control. The executive and members of these bodies are elected by a voice vote. These councils adjudge matters of social behaviour, religious sanctions, cases of divorce, etc. The violation of social and religious norms provokes monetary punishments and/or may include expiatory atonements. Since Independence, the functions of the jati panchayat have been circumscribed.
The Aheria are Hindu by religion. Their village deities such as Jhind, Tejaji, Goraji, Mahadevji and Hanumanji, are regularly worshipped. Their pilgrimage centres are Ganga, Yamuna, Badrinath and Rameshwaram. The sacred specialist (gotiya) cures their ailments with herbal prescriptions. They celebrate Holi, Sargani, Rakhi, Diwali, etc. During Dussehra, weapons are worshipped. Aheri women decorate the outer sides of their houses with line drawings of trees, birds, etc. Folk-songs are sung during Holi and during marriages.
The Aheri are traditionally linked with the Chamar, the Dhobi, thi Kumbhar, the Barber, the Lohkutt, and the Bhadwa/Jaga, who serve them in different ways. During the festival of Rakhi new kinship ties may be forged with persons outside their community. They maintain cultivator-labour relations.
Their attitude to male education is positive and their boys study upto the secondary level. Girls usually study up to primary level. Their literacy rate in Rajasthan is 15.68 per cent (24.78 per cent males and only 4.94 per cent females). For health and medical care, they prefer indigenous medicine. They take recourse to magical cures (jantar) for severe ailments. The family welfare programme is adopted by some of them, and generally it is the women who opt for sterilization. Drinking water is collected from hand pumps. The facilities of the public distribution system, as well as the services of IRDP, are available to them. They cannot afford electricity. The Aheri do not save with banks; they usually depend on moneylenders.
The Aheri or Aheria are also called Heri in Delhi. They are migrants from Rajasthan in the Union Territory of Delhi a fact authenticated in the works of Crooke (1896) and Russell and Hiralal (1916). The Hindi language replaced their mother tongue Harauti. Their population in Delhi is 4080. They claim to be Sisodia Rajputs and are divided into a number of exogamous clans such as the Popara, the Hul, the Sisodia, the Mangolia, etc. They use the surnames Aheri and Singh. In Rajasthan they are traditionally hunters, but in Delhi main economic pursuit is the selling of flowers and garlands. Some of them have occupationally diversified to set up small-scale enterprises and also entered government and other services. According to the census, 37.92 per cent of them are returned as workers (56.92 per cent males and 11.99 per cent females). Of them 36.65 per cent workers are engaged in manufacturing, processing, servicing, etc. that is in household industry (4.78 per cent) and in other-than-household industry (31.87 per cent). This is followed by 23.85 per cent workers in construction, 14.09 per cent in trade and commerce, 8.34 per cent in transport, etc., and the remaining 17.07 per cent workers are engaged in other services. They are in favour of family planning, modern medicare and formal education, and some of their boys and girls have studied even up to the college level. Their literacy rate is 29.83 per cent. Both males and females have achieved relatively high literacy rates, of 38.83 and 17.56 per cent, respectively. Since most of them live in urban Delhi, they have access to a number of modern facilities.

The Aheria are an ethnic community of India.
In March 2016, the Aheria were approved by the Lok Sabha for listing as a Scheduled Caste in Haryana. The approval does not constitute a formal listing as that requires the bill to be passed through the entire process of the Parliament of India.[1]
