Declassified: Operation Sindoor is a 2026 Indian two-part documentary television series produced for Discovery Channel India. It chronicles the planning, execution and aftermath of Operation Sindoor, India's 88-hour military response to the Pahalgam attack of 22 April 2025. The series premiered on 15 August 2026 (India's Independence Day) on Discovery Channel India and discovery+, airing from 9:00 pm to 11:00 pm IST.[1][2]

The documentary marks the launch of Warner Bros. Discovery's "Declassified" franchise in South Asia. It features first-hand accounts from senior Indian national security and military leaders, including National Security Advisor Ajit Doval (in his first detailed public interview on the operation), former Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan, and other senior officers from the Army, Navy and Air Force, as well as defence analysts and journalists.[1][3]

Background

Operation Sindoor was launched by the Indian Armed Forces in the early hours of 7 May 2025 as a coordinated tri-services response to the Pahalgam terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir, in which 26 civilians were killed on 22 April 2025. The operation involved precision strikes on terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir and lasted approximately 88 hours before hostilities ceased on the evening of 10 May 2025 following communications between the Directors General of Military Operations of both countries.[4][5]

Synopsis

The two-part series traces the sequence of events from the immediate aftermath of the Pahalgam attack through intelligence gathering, surveillance, target selection, operational planning and the execution of strikes. Part one focuses on preparations, including mock drills and scenario planning. Part two covers the coordinated action involving the Indian Army, Air Force and Navy.[3][4]

Key elements highlighted include the narrowing of an initial list of 34 potential targets to nine, the use of space-based and cyber assets prior to kinetic action, the interception of a high-speed Pakistani missile aimed at Delhi by India's Barak-8 system near Sirsa, Haryana, and subsequent BrahMos cruise missile strikes on multiple Pakistani airbases (including Rafiqui, Sukkur, Rahim Yar Khan, Nur Khan, Sargodha, Bholari and Jacobabad).[6][7]

National Security Advisor Ajit Doval stated in the documentary that the objective was "destruction of the enemy camps particularly those who had been responsible for the Pahalgam attack" and that India's restraint should not be mistaken for weakness.[3][5]

Production

The series was co-directed by Prabhu Asgaonkar and Manika Berry. It was produced for Warner Bros. Discovery as the inaugural entry in its "Declassified" franchise. Sai Abishek, Head of Factual Entertainment, Lifestyle & Kids, South Asia at Warner Bros. Discovery, described the project as bringing audiences closer to defining historical moments through unprecedented access to the three branches of the Indian armed forces and key experts.[1][3]

Filmmakers faced challenges in securing access to sensitive military and national security material and in obtaining interviews with senior decision-makers, including Ajit Doval. National security analyst Nitin A. Gokhale appears as a principal civilian voice in the series.[8]

Release

Declassified: Operation Sindoor premiered exclusively on Discovery Channel India and discovery+ on 15 August 2026 from 9:00 pm to 11:00 pm IST. It has also been made available on platforms including Amazon Prime Video and JioTV.[1][9]

Reception

Critical response

Indian media outlets described the series as providing rare first-hand accounts and a detailed chronology of the operation. Reviews noted the value of access to senior leadership and the documentary's focus on strategic decision-making and inter-service coordination.[10][7]
