Artificial intelligence in India

The artificial intelligence (AI) market in India is anticipated to reach $8 billion by 2025, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) exceeding 40% from 2020 to 2025. This growth is part of a global AI boom characterized by rapid technological advancements. India emerged as a pioneer in the early 2010s with the development of natural language processing (NLP) based chatbots from companies like Haptik, Corover.ai, and Niki.ai. The early 2020s saw a surge in prominence due to advancements in reinforcement learning, exemplified by generative AI models such as those developed by OpenAI, Krutrim, and AlphaFold from Google DeepMind. In India, AI has significantly transformed various sectors, including healthcare, finance, and education. This progress has been supported by government initiatives, notably NITI Aayog's 2018 National Strategy for Artificial Intelligence. Prestigious institutions like the Indian Statistical Institute and the Indian Institute of Science have contributed to the field by publishing groundbreaking AI research papers and patents. AI applications in India include the use of diagnostic tools in medical devices, analysis of medical reports, prediction of advertising and marketing outcomes, product design and development, and cognitive testing in healthcare. Generative AI technologies are increasingly being utilized by Indian brands for product ideation, visual concept development, and social media content creation. While the potential for economic growth and social development through AI is substantial in India, several challenges must be addressed to ensure responsible deployment. These challenges include concerns about data privacy, a shortage of skilled professionals, and ethical considerations surrounding AI use.
