Ram Pothineni (born 15 May 1988) is an Indian actor who primarily works in Telugu films. He made his acting debut with the box office success Devadasu (2006), for which he won Filmfare Award for Best Male Debut – South. He is a receipent of several awards including two Filmfare Award South and one South Indian International Movie Award nomination.[2]
Post his debut, he starred in the commercial and critical success, Ready (2008). This was followed by a series of commercial failures, before success with Kandireega (2011). For both these films, he received Filmfare Award for Best Actor – Telugu nomination. Pothineni went onto appear in successful and notable films such as Pandaga Chesko (2015), Nenu Sailaja (2016), Vunnadhi Okate Zindagi (2017), Hello Guru Prema Kosame (2018), iSmart Shankar (2019) and Red (2021). For his performance in iSmart Shankar, he received SIIMA Award for Best Actor – Telugu nomination.[3]
Early life and family
Ram Pothineni was born on 15 May 1988,[4][5] in Hyderabad. Born into a Telugu family and hailing from Vijayawada, he is the son of Murali Pothineni and Padmasree Pothineni. He is the nephew of Telugu film producer, Sravanthi Ravi Kishore.[6] Actor Sharwanand is his cousin.[7]
Career
Debut and early career (2002–2012)
Pothineni first appeared in Tamil language short film Adayaalam (2002) where he played an 18-year old drug addict.[1] He then made his feature film debut in 2006 with Devadasu portraying a college student opposite Ileana D'Cruz.[8][9] idlebrain noted, "Ram is impressive. He does not have any camera consciousness and did whatever he is supposed to unabashedly." He won Filmfare Award for Best Male Debut - South.[10] He next appeared in Jagadam opposite Isha Sahani in 2007. Rediff.com stated, "Ram has done a good job and proves he is not a one hit film wonder."[11]
Pothineni portrayed Chandu in Ready opposite Genelia D'Souza in 2008. It was a commercial success.[12][13] Rediff.com mentions, "Ram and Genelia impart a youthful feel with their presence. Ram flexes his muscles and is totally at ease." He received Filmfare Award for Best Actor - Telugu nomination for the film.[14]
In 2009, he had two releases. He first appeared as a happy-go-lucky guy in Maska opposite Hansika Motwani.[15] He then portrayed an orphan in Ganesh: Just Ganesh opposite Kajal Aggarwal.[16] 123telugu said, "Ram is the main attraction of the movie and he delivers a sincere performance."[17] In 2010, he appeared in Rama Rama Krishna Krishna opposite Priya Anand. The New Indian Express stated, "Raam exudes energy in the dance and fight sequences, but he is surely handicapped by a weak script."[18]
Pothineni in 2011, portrayed a high school dropout in Kandireega opposite Hansika Motwani. The film was a commercial success.[19][20] Times of India stated, "Ram carries the whole film on his shoulders and is a bundle of talent and energy. His lively act and fun dialogue delivery livens up the screen."[21] In 2012, he portrayed dual roles in Endukante... Premanta! opposite Tamannaah.[22][23] CNN-IBN noted, "Ram has undoubtedly matured as an actor and carries the role as if it was a breeze for him."[24]
Career fluctuations (2011–2016)
Pothineni's next film was Kandireega (2011).[25] Later he starred in Endukante... Premanta! (2012) alongside Tamannaah, directed by Karunakaran and produced by Sravanthi Ravi Kishore. In 2013, Pothineni appeared in Ongole Githa with Kriti Kharbanda directed by Bhaskar and produced by B.V.S.N. Prasad. In the same year, he co-starred alongside Venkatesh in the action comedy Masala, the remake of the Hindi film Bol Bachchan, directed by K. Vijaya Bhaskar and jointly produced by Sravanthi Ravi Kishore and D. Suresh Babu.[26]
In 2015, Pothineni starred in two films, Pandaga Chesko and Shivam . While Pandaga Chesko directed by Gopichand Malineni, was a commercial success,[27] Shivam ended up as one of the biggest failures of his career.[28] In 2016, He had two releases, both produced by his own production house Sri Sravanthi Movies, Nenu Sailaja which was a commercial success[29] and Santosh Srinivas-directed Hyper which was an average at the box office.[30]
Success and recent work (2017–present)
His 2017 coming-of-age film Vunnadhi Okate Zindagi received mixed reviews. In 2018, he starred in the romantic comedy Hello Guru Prema Kosame directed by Trinadha Rao Nakkina. In 2019, he collaborated with director Puri Jagannadh for the action thriller iSmart Shankar. Pothineni tasted success with the film after a series of flops.[31] It grossed over ₹90 crore, his career's highest grosser.[32]
His 2021 film is Red where he played a dual role, is a remake of Tamil film Thadam (2018).[31] In 2022, he starred in the Lingusamy-directed The Warriorr where he played a police officer.[33] The film received negative reviews from critics and was huge commercial failure.[34]
Pothineni is signed onto star in Boyapati Srinu's #RAPO20. It will be his first pan-India film.[35]
Other work and public image
Pothineni is considered among the most popular actor in Telugu cinema.[36] He is popularly referred to as "Energetic Star", in the media.[37] Pothineni is widely known for his work in films such as Ready, Kandireega, Vunnadhi Okate Zindagi,[38] Hello Guru Prema Kosame and iSmart Shankar. He is the only South Indian actor to have 2 billion views on his films on Youtube.[39]
Pothineni is a humanitarian and lends support to a number of social causes. He participated in Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan in 2014.[40] He donated a sum of Rs 25 lakh to CM Relief Fund during the 2020 Hyderabad floods.[41] He is associated with Pratyusha Organisation, and provides them funds regularly.[1]
Pothineni has fequently featured on the Hyderabad Times' 30 Most Desirable Men list. He ranked 11th in 2017 and 2018,[42][43] 3rd in 2019 and 2nd in 2020.[44][45] He did his first ever brand endorsement for Garnier alongside John Abraham.[46][47]
