Vaathi
Vaathi is a 2023 Indian period action drama film written and directed by Venky Atluri. The film was shot simultaneously in Tamil and Telugu with the latter titled as Sir and produced by Tollywood studios Sithara Entertainments and Fortune Four Cinemas.[1][2] The film features Dhanush and Samyuktha in primary roles along with P. Sai Kumar, Tanikella Bharani, Samuthirakani and Hyper Aadi.[3]

Plot
In the small town of Sozhavaram/Siripuram in the late 1990s and early 2000s, Srinivas Thirupathi/Srinivas Tripathi is the owner of private colleges, who adopts some government colleges and sends some of his faculty members as the latter knows that his faculty members aren't capable to teach students and wants to eliminate all public institutions of intermediate college education and force students into his private institutions. However, Balamurugan/Bala Gangadhar Tilak, a qualified teacher thwarts Thirupathi/Tripathi's plans by making the students at Sozhavaram/Siripuram government college get first class distinction. This news enrages Thirupathi/Tripathi who reprimands and challenges Balamurugan/Bala Gangadhar Tilak at the school's meet to celebrate the success of the students. Thirupathi/Tripathi challenges Balamurugan/Bala Gangadhar Tilak to make the students secure TNPCEE/EAMCET ranks. Balu accepts the challenge and soon starts to prepare the students.

Production
Principal photography of the film began on 7 January 2022. The second schedule of the shoot began in April 2022 when Dhanush had joined the sets after he had finished the shoot of Naane Varuvean. The filming was completed on October 2022.[4][5][6]

The music of the film is composed by G. V. Prakash Kumar. The first single titled "Vaa Vaathi" in Tamil and "Mastaaru Mastaaru" in Telugu was released on 10 November 2022.[7][8] The second single titled "Naadodi Mannan" in Tamil and "Banjara" in Telugu was released on 17 January 2023.[9][10]

Release
Theatrical
The film was scheduled for a theatrical release on 2 December 2022 in Tamil and Telugu, but was postponed.[11][12] In November 2022, it was announced that the film will release on 17 February 2023.[13] It was announced that Seven Screen Studio has acquired the distribution rights of the film in Tamil Nadu.[14]
Home media
Initially, there were reports suggesting that the film's digital rights were acquired by Aha, but later it was acquired by Netflix while the satellite rights were sold to Sun TV Network.[15] The film premiered on Netflix on 17 March 2023 in Tamil, Telugu, and Hindi.[16]
Reception
Shubham Kulkarni of Koimoi rated the film 3.5 out of 5 stars and said "Vaathi is a film that at large has a big intention but it never forgets to entertain its audience".[17] Logesh Balachandran of The Times of India rated the film 3 out of 5 stars and wrote "Vaathi is a film that's mounted on no-nonsense writing though it could have been even better".[18] Latha Srinivasan of India Today rated the film 2.5 out of 5 and said that the film has a "noble mission" but Venky Atluri's story and narration are a big let-down.[19] Avinash Ramachandran of The New Indian Express rated the film 2.5 out of 5 stars and wrote "Despite using a 140-minute runtime to teach us a bunch of subjects, but the film teaches us are "Films don't have to be preachy to drive home a point" and "Dhanush can make anything look easy".[20] Anandu Suresh of The Indian Express rated the film 1.5 out of 5 stars and termed the film as Dhanush starrer about right to education fares poorly.[21] Bharathy Singaravel of The News Minute rated the film 1 out of 5 stars and wrote "A film of such mediocrity and confused politics".[22]
