Dr. Faguni Ram (2 January 1945 – 25 February 2018) was an Indian politician. He was a minister of state, Bihar and member of the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Parliament of India representing Bihar as a member of the Indian National Congress for three terms. He was made in-charge of several states like Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Uttarakhand, Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, UT Chandigarh, Maharashtra, Goa, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Gujarat.
He worked closely with Shri Rajiv Gandhi (Hon. Prime Minister of India) and helped in providing platform to many politicians who are prominent leaders today, like Ms. shailja. He believed in letting work speak for itself and did not use social media much. His work experience, life journey and education makes him one of the tallest schedule caste leader in pan India. He was self made in truest sense.
Dr. Faguni Ram, whose father was Sh. Baijnath Ram (Freedom Fighter), was born on 2 January 1945. He obtained BA and MA degrees in Geography, as well as a PhD, and married Dr. Sushila Das. He obtained another MA in Sanskrit. He was one of the few parliamentarian who could converse in Sanskrit language. He took his oath in Sanskrit. [1]
Dr. Ram was a member of the Legislative Assembly of Bihar between 1972–77 and served as a minister of state in the Government of Bihar in 1972. He was youngest person to hold a ministerial position.He was a member of the Rajya Sabha from 1985–1988, 1988–1994 and from 2000.[1]
Outside politics, Ram wrote Development of Irrigation and its Impact on Agriculture and was a co-author of the 25 volumes of Instant Encyclopaedia of Geography. He was an accomplished calligraphy writer.
He and his wife Dr. Sushila Das were among the first members of a Scheduled Caste in the state to hold a PhD degree. They always stressed education as a means to self-development and the development of people they served. He served in Bihar State Administrative Services but left to become MLA from Aurangabad.[2]
Dr. Ram breathed last on 25 February 2018 in Ram Manohar Lohia hospital. He was cremated in Nigambodh Ghat.[3] Words of Hon.Muppavarapu Venkaiah Naidu, the 13th vice president of India about Dr. Ram: "In the passing away of Dr Faguni Ram, the country has lost a distinguished parliamentarian and a dedicated social worker,"
