Barroz: Guardian of D' Gama's Treasure is an upcoming Pan indian Malayalam-language film directed by Mohanlal. The screenplay was written by Jijo Punnoose based on his novel Barroz: Guardian of D' Gama's Treasure, the film was produced by Antony Perumbavoor through Aashirvad Cinemas. It stars Mohanlal in the title role.

Principal photography began in March 2021 and was shot at Kochi, Trivandrum, Goa, Bangkok.[2][3][4] Being made on a budget of ₹250 crore, it is the most expensive Malayalam film till date.[1]

Barroz has been protecting D' Gama's treasure for 400 years and has been entrusted to hand over the treasure to a true descendant of Gama

Development

On 21 April 2019, Mohanlal published a blog post titled A New Journey Begins Barroz Guardian of D' Gama's Treasure announcing his directorial debut, a 3D film based on the story Barroz – Guardian of D'Gama's Treasure by Jijo Punnoose. Mohanlal wrote that he and T. K. Rajeev Kumar were originally planning to make a stage play in 3D format. They had a story but a director was not decided. They wanted someone experienced and consulted Punnoose who directed India's first 3D film My Dear Kuttichathan (1984). However, as the play required a larger budget than what they expected, the project was put on hold. On that meeting, Jijo happened to talk about his story Barroz – Guardian of D'Gama's Treasure. It excited Mohanlal who proposed the story has the potential to be made into a great movie and he would like to direct it. Punnoose welcomed the idea and encouraged him to direct. He revealed the film will be shot in Goa and the locations have been decided, and the cast includes many foreign actors.[5]

Casting

In July, Mohanlal had posted on social media a video unveiling more details about the film. In the video, he said he had cast Rafael Amargo, Paz Vega and Caesar to act in the film. Mohanlal also said, “Barroz is a story set against the backdrop of the maritime history of Portugal, Spain, Africa and India. Barroz is indeed, about our shared heritage that we inherited from our ancestors”.[6][7] Veteran actor director Pratap Pothen has announced that he has been cast in the film, where he will be playing the role of a Voodoo doll.[8] Later, Vega was replaced by her sister Sara Vega. Since the film was delayed due to COVID-19 lockdown, some of the majot cast was to be replaced. Prithviraj Sukumaran opted out from the film due to date clash with Kaduva and Aadujeevitham, and lead actress Shayla McCaffrey was replaced by Indo-British actress Maya.[9] In December 2021, Guru Somasundaram and * Meera Jasmine confirmed that they bothis in the film.[10]

Filming

Principal photography began on 31 March 2021 at the set constructed for the film in Fort Kochi.[11] Shoot in Goa was supposed to begin on 9 August 2021.[12] Santosh Sivan was the cinematographer. According to Sivan, "it's a visual film that doesn't have a conventional story. It's got magical realism, 3D and is VFX heavy; that's why it needs more time and effort".[13] Filming resumed on 26 December 2021, recasting and reshoots were done.[14] Mohanlal scrapped the portion featuring Prithviraj Sukumaran shot in April 2021. Filming took place in Kochi from February to April 2022.[15] Shooting in Goa was completed in May 2022.[16] Two songs will be shot in Portugal and Bangkok[13]
