History

After Eastern Railway (now under East Central Railways) set a deadline to eliminate all steam locomotive operations by 1990, a push was given towards establishing electric locomotion as the primary motive power, and the Steam locomotive sheds were decommissioned.[1] To meet the needs of exponentially increasing rail traffic on the new continuous broad gauge lines from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar to rest of India with the completion of gauge conversion, the Pt. Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Nagar (Mughalsarai) was selected by Indian railways for a new electric locomotive shed.[2] The shed started it's operations in 1969 with a planned allotment of 45 WAG-2 locomotives. The high speed coaching locomotives were introduced in 1993.[3]

Operations

Being one of the three electric engine sheds in East Central Railway, various major and minor maintenance schedules of electric locomotives are carried out here. It has the sanctioned capacity of 150 engine units. Beyond the operating capacity, this shed houses a total of 57 engine units, including WAG-9, 51 WAP-4 and 75 WAG-7. It also formerly housed a few WAM-4 locomotives.[4] Electric loco Shed, Pt. Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Nagar (Mughalsarai) is now housing a large fleet of WAG-7 in Indian Railways and it caters to many long-distance freight electric trains.[5][6]

Like all locomotive sheds, DDU does regular maintenance, overhaul and repair including painting and washing of locomotives. It not only attends to locomotives housed at DDU but to ones coming in from other sheds as well. It has four pit lines for loco repair. Deen Dayal Upadhyaya ELS along with Gomoh ELS and Barauni ELS were the regular links for all trains running through Uttar Pradeshand Bihar when widespread electrification of railway lines started in East Central Railways. DDU locomotives used to be predominantly the regular links for trains traveling to south as well. It handled prestigious trains like Swarnarekha express, Shramjeevi Superfast Express, Palamu Express and many more link express trains and superfast trains.
