Arvind Khanna (born 29 May 1967) is an Indian politician, businessman and social worker. He is the candidate of Shiromani Akali Dal from Sangrur for 2022 elections, he has also served as member of legislative assembly from Sangrur (2002-2007) and from Dhuri (2012-2015), he had also served as the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) General Secretary.[1] Khanna's business interests lie in the Defence and Arms Industry.[2][3]

Political career

Khanna was introduced in politics by Sukhbir Singh Badal of Shiromani Akali Dal in 1997 as general secretary of district youth wing. He later joined Indian National Congress in 1998, served as a party treasurer and contested from Sangrur in 2002.[4] He secured 42,339 votes (44.2%) and won by the margin of 19,132 votes.[5] In 2004, he contested from Sangrur Lok Sabha Constituency, and lost by few votes from Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa. In 2012, he won from Dhuri by securing 51,536 votes (45.65%).[6] In May 2014, he resigned as Dhuri MLA.[7] Later he quit Congress.[8][9] In 2021, it was reported that Khanna is joining Akali Dal, and would contest from Sangrur in 2022 elections.[10] Khanna is also a close relative of Captain Amarinder Singh due to which he was perceived to be his right hand man and his blue-eyed boy, he would regularly provide his helicopter and private aircraft for Amarinder's personal use.[11][12][13]

Philanthropy

In 1997, Khanna founded an NGO named Umeed (meaning hope) in Sangrur.[14][15] Umeed is one of the largest NGOs in Punjab since its inception, Umeed has reached out to 550 villages and has benefited 12 million people of diverse communities with services in healthcare, social empowerment and community development.[16][17][18]

Business

Khanna's father, Vipin Khanna is thought to be one of the biggest and most powerful players in the Defence and Arms Industry in India.[19][20][3][21]

He is a director in several companies such as TSL Defence Technologies, ASAS Global Services, ASAS Tech Solutions, ASAS Tech, Root Invest, Umeed Urban Solutions, Umeed Projects.[22][23] Khanna has also been a part owner Punjab Kings Indian Premier League cricket team.[24][25][26]


Personal life

Khanna was born on 29 May 1967.[27] Khanna's ancestors migrated from Pakistan during the partition of India in 1947. He did his schooling from Millfield School in United Kingdom. He graduated in business management Pepperdien University, California in 1989, and returned to Delhi in 1991.[4] He is married to Shagun Khanna, a lifestyle blogger. They have two sons, Adhiraj and Suryaveer.[28][29] Khanna is the son of Nagendra Khanna-daughter of former Chief Minister of Punjab Amarinder Singh's grandfather-and Patiala's Raja Bhupinder Singh.[30]
