Hemant Nagrale is a 1987 batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer who was serving as the Police Commissioner of Mumbai, India. He took over as Mumbai's police commissioner in March 2021, post the transfer of Param Bir Singh. Nagrale worked as ASP Rajura in Naxalite affected Chandrapur district during years of his tenure (1989-92). In Solapur, as DCP (1992-94), he was instrumental in the construction of a new Commissionerate at Solapur. He successfully controlled the Babri Masjid communal riots in Solapur city in 1992. During his tenure as SP, Ratnagiri District (1994–1996), he handled the land acquisition problem related to Enron/ Dabol Power Corporation with professional dexterity.
As SP, CID, Crime (1996–1998), Nagrale investigated the MPSC paper leak case, which had spread across many parts of Maharashtra. Hemant Nagrale went on deputation to CBI (March 1998 - September 2002) and was posted as SP BSFC, CBI, Mumbai and later as DIG, CBI, New Delhi. He investigated and completed a number of cases, such as the Ketan Parekh scam, the Madhopura Co-op bank scam (Rs 800 crore) and the Harshad Mehta 2001 (Rs 400 crore) Rs 30 crore bank scam. On promotion, Nagrale was posted as Special IGP and Director at MSEDCL (gambling 2008-August 2010). His tenure leads to better enforcement and a 25 per cent increase in company revenue by reducing better electricity enforcement matters.[1] He also played an instrumental role in saving people during the Mumbai terror attack in 2008. He spotted and inspected a bag containing RDX and carried it to a secure location before informing the bomb disposal squad.[2]
As an IPS officer, his first assignment (1989-92) was in the Naxalite-affected Chandrapur district as ASP of Rajura. He was appointed as DCP in Solapur from 1992 to1994 and was instrumental in the creation of the new Commissionerate of Solapur. His controlling of the law and order situation in the aftermath of the Babri Masjid Communal riots in Solapur city in 1992 was much appreciated.[2]
Education
He completed schooling till class 6 in ZP School at Bhadravati, Chandrapur district, and later moved to Nagpur where he completed his schooling from Patwardhan High School.[2] Nagrale holds a degree of BE (Mechanical) from VRCE Nagpur (now VNIT) and is a post-graduate in Master of Finance Management (JBIMS, Mumbai).[1]
Personal life
Nagrale married Pratima in 1990 and has two children, including a daughter. In March 2008, his wife wrote a complaint letter against him to government departments including then CM Vilasrao Deshmukh. Pratima, in her complaint, stated that her husband tried to force her out of the residence and threatened to put her in a mental hospital if she doesn’t keep distance from him. She had alleged that Hemant had been physically torturing her to get a divorce. The couple was granted a divorce in February 2009. However, in 2010 the Bombay High Court set aside the order passed by the family court, grating divorce to Hemant Nagrale from his wife Pratima Nagrale, saying that the trial court has committed manifest error in the exercise of discretion and power vested in it. After which Pratima filed a petition in the court accusing Nagrale of amassing disproportionate assets. The Bombay High Court had then asked the Anti-Corruption Bureau of the state to probe the disproportionate assets case.
